Prewash tote bag to remove any sizing or finishes that may interfere with the absorption of the dyes.
Cover work surface with a plastic cover.
Lay wet bag on a flat surface. Beginning at bottom of bag, accordion fold bag in 2-inch wide pleats. Fold handles on top of pleats, and wrap rubber bands around pleated bag at 1½-inch intervals to create a striped pattern.
Wearing rubber gloves, mix one-half box of Kelly Green dye with 1 gallon very hot water; stir well. If tap water is not hot enough, heat water in the microwave or tea kettle. Immerse wrapped bag in dye bath for about 10 minutes or until desired color is reached.
Remove bag from dye, cut rubber bands and rinse in cold water until water runs clear. Then wash bag in warm water with a mild detergent. Rinse and hang dry.
Cut a bird shape from the blue felt and a branch shape from the cocoa felt. Position branch on tote bag and hand sew around outer edges with dark brown embroidery floss. Then place bird on branch and hand sew to bag with light turquoise floss.
Cut 5 large flower shapes and 5 small flower shapes from assorted colors of felt. Place one small flower inside of a larger flower. Glue flowers to bag. Glue a rhinestone in the center of each flower.
Mix colors of Rit® dye to create a personalized tote.
