Project Instructions

Step: 1

Cover/protect workspace. Wearing protective gloves is recommended.

Step: 2

Shake Iron Metallic Surfacer very well, prior to use. Apply Iron Metallic Surfacer to entire wooden anchor shelf for base coat. Apply in several, thin layers, allowing time to dry-to-touch between coats. Use different application techniques such as brushing and sponging to create texture and depth.

Step: 3

To produce rust finish, apply Rust Solution by brush or sponge to base coat on anchor. For richer rust coloring (orange/red), apply Rust Solution to Iron Metallic Surfacer while final coat is still damp. For duller rust coloring (brown), apply Rust Solution after final coat of Iron Metallic Surfacer has dried 10-15 minutes. Allow 15-45 minutes develop time for Iron Metallic Surfacer to begin oxidizing. Rust finish will continue to develop over 24 hours.

Step: 4

For best results, sponge additional layers of Iron Metallic Surfacer and Rust Solution over already rusted spots to add depth and create a more authentic, aged look. Iron oxide will continue to develop naturally if left unsealed and placed outdoors or in a humid environment (such as a bathroom). To prevent further oxidation, seal entire anchor with Primer & Clear Sealer once desired rust effect is achieved.

Step: 5

Drape netting around rusted anchor in decorative fashion. Affix to back of anchor with staples.

Step: 6

Add sea shells and other beach embellishments as desired (glue optional). Decorative, rusted anchor shelf is now ready to hang.

Tips

Sophisticated Finishes Iron Metallic Surfacer contains real iron filings. Adding Rust Solution to wet or dry Iron Metallic Surfacer creates a chemical reaction resulting in the oxidation (rusting) of the iron filings, mirroring the natural aging of iron when exposed to water over a period of time. While the rust finish is non toxic, please take care when handling as the iron oxide produced may rub off onto hands and clothing.
