Project Instructions

  1. Paint half of the wooden squares with the gray paint and let dry. Paint the other half with the blue paint and let dry. Lastly, paint over the gray wooden squares with the glitter paint and let dry.
  2. Glue each glitter wooden square to a blue wooden square. Cut small pieces of black ribbon and glue along an edge of each of the sandwiched pairs as shown. Leave enough ribbon in between each sandwiched pair so that it can fold up like an accordian easily.
  3. On the blue sides of the wooden squares, use the alphabet stickers to outline important dates of Sally Ride's lifetime. Use the stickers to embellish the glitter side of the wooden squares and any leftover areas on the alphabet sides of the squares.
  4. Once all the stickers are in place, use the Mod Podge® and the foam brush to paint a thin layer over each of the sides of the wooden squares to seal everything in place.

Tips

You could easily change this project to be about any other important person in history. The number of wooden squares will depend on the number of dates you want to illustrate.

Background

Many diverse people have been a part of making the United States a great nation. Have the students create a list of the qualities that make someone an outstanding person: bravery, a sense of adventure, intelligence, compassion, etc. Then have the students create their own lists of people in the history of the United States who exhibit some of these qualities. Women like Sacajawea and Jane Addams and Sally Ride; men like Benjamin Franklin and George Washington Carver. Working in pairs, have the students research and write a report on a famous person from American History. To illustrate their reports, have them create an illustrated time-line showing the important events and accomplishments in their person's life. They might want to include quotes and symbols to further enhance their time-line. Display the time-lines around the room and allow students to talk about their famous person to the rest of the class.
