Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130°C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.
Begin by preheating oven to 275°F (130°C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Step 1 The base is one package of unconditioned Sweet Potato clay.
Step 2 To create the shoes -- roll out two ¼" balls of black, then roll them into a rounded teardrop shape. Press gently onto the orange base.
Step 3 Cut two pieces of wire, approximately 4" each, and push each one of the wires into the shoes.
Step 4 Roll out ¼ package of Sweet Potato and ¼ package of black, approximately 3"x¼". Roll the two colors together, then twist them to “swirl” the colors. Roll out a smooth log, approximately 4" long. Cut into ¼" pieces and roll into smooth balls. Gently push each ball down onto the wire, one on top of each other.
Step 5 Bake as directed above. Let cool completely.
Step 6 To make the body, use ¾ of a package of Sweet Potato clay. Condition the Sweet Potato until it is warm and pliable and form into a rounded rectangle. Push this down onto the wire (above the beaded legs). Roll out four 1/8 inch balls of black clay and attach to the front of the body -- press gently. These are the buttons.
Step 7 Roll out ½ package of black clay, approximately 1"x1/8". Attach each one to each side of the body, making sure to slightly bend the arms at the elbows and then adhere the “hands” close to the bottom of the body.
Step 8 Push a toothpick about halfway down into the upper part of the body. This will secure the pumpkin head to the body.
Step 9 To create the head roll out a 1½" ball of Sweet Potato clay. Form into a fat circle. Press the head onto the toothpick. Using the craft knife, score vertical lines into the pumpkin.
Step 10 Flatten a one inch piece of black clay and using the craft knife, cut a zigzag smile about ¾" long. .
Step 11 The nose is a 1/16" ball of Sweet Potato. Gently adhere above mouth.
Step 12 Eyes are small round balls of black. Gently adhere to the face.
Step 13 Using a toothpick, drill a small hole at the top of the pumpkin’s head.
Step 14 Bake as directed above. Let cool. Add of few drops of glue to the hole at the top of the head and insert the ostrich feather.
Step 15 Thin out some white glue with equal parts of water and brush onto the parts of the doll to adhere the glitter. While it is still wet, sprinkle black glitter and mica flakes. Let dry.
