Stitches:

Ripple (also called chevron) blankets are made by increasing stitches to create a peak, and decreasing stitches to create a valley. You will have to work several rows of crochet before this pattern becomes apparent.

To increase, 3 dc in one ch. Always work each inc (peak) directly over the center of the increase (peak) of the previous row.

To decrease, dc3tog once, as follows: Yo, insert hook into st and draw up one loop. Yo again, and draw through 2 loops. *(With these loops still on the hook, yo and insert hook into next st, then draw up one loop. Yo, and draw through 2 loops as before.) Rep from * once more, then yo and draw through all remaining loops on hook (there will be four). Always work each dec (valley) directly over the center of the dec (valley) of the previous row.

Instructions:

Using Color A, ch 178, turn.

Row 1: Dc in 3rd ch from hook, *dc in next 6 ch, 3 dc in next ch, dc in 6 ch, dc3tog in next ch. Rep across the ch to the end of the row. You will end the row on a dec, but there will only be 2 st left to dec , not 3. Dc2tog, then ch 2 and turn.

Row 2: To create a textured surface, as in the photo below, work stitches in the back loop only for this row and all following rows until the afghan is complete.  Dc in 2nd ch from hook. *Dc in next 6 ch, 3 dc in next ch, dc in 6 ch, dc3tog in next ch. Rep across the ch to the end of the row. Dc2tog in the final two st, then ch 2 and turn.

Row 3-5: Rep Row 2, continuing to work in Color A.

Finishing: After completing the final row, knot off the yarn. Use a yarn needle or your crochet hook to weave in the yarn tails, and any other remaining yarn tails on the sides of the blanket.

Tips

When changing colors, work the row as usual to the end, where you will dc2tog. At the last yo (before drawing through all loops, yo with new color. Draw through all loops on hook (including loop with new color) to complete st and row. Fasten off old color.

As you change colors, you may weave in the yarn tails as you work, or work over the yarn tails, weaving them in as you dc.
