Read all tips in the Project Tip section below before beginning project.
Roll about 1/6 package of beige clay into a medium thickness. Trim the edges straight and bevel two opposite ends.
Roll half that amount of brown clay very thin. Lay the beige on top of the brown sheet and cut around it, leaving about 1/8-inch extra on the beveled sides. Fold the brown over the first beveled edge and begin to roll the two sheets into a spiral. Press firmly and roll until the diameter of the log is reduced to about ¼-inch in diameter.
Roll a ball of tan clay about ¾-inch diameter. Cut slices of the spiral log as thin as possible and apply them all around the tan ball of clay. Flatten the ball slightly and using the needle tool to pierce horizontally.
Roll a brown log of clay about 3/8-inch diameter and 1½-inches long. Roll a thin sheet of tan clay large enough to wrap around the brown log.
Repeat with a thinner layer of brown, a thin layer of beige, and a final thinner layer of brown. Press and roll the log until the diameter of the log is reduced to about ¼-inch in diameter.
Roll 2 balls of brown clay about ½-inch diameter. Cut thin slices of the bullseye cane and press them all around the balls. Roll each bead until the seams between the slices disappear. Use the needle tool to pierce the bead and re-shape it into a bi-cone shape.
Roll medium thick sheets of all three colors and layer each in the desired arrangement.
Create a loaf with 6-10 layers about 1½-inches x 1½-inches. Cut into rectangles with two sides about 3/8-inches and however tall the stack. Use the needle tool to pierce the stack from top to bottom.
Bake and String
Bake all the beads according to the package instructions and let cool completely.
String the beads with the spiral cane bead in the center, surrounded by the stripe and bullseye beads in a regular pattern. Space the beads with 3-4 seed beads between each. When the desired length is achieved, secure the ends with the clasp and crimp beads.
Use photo as a guide and follow manufacturer’s instructions for all products used.
Make sure to clean hands and tools before starting project.
Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces.
Knead clay for 2 minutes.
Start with lighter colors and work down to darker colors to avoid discoloring of the clay.
Putting canes in the freezer for a few minutes makes them easier to slice.
Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275º F (130º C) for 15 minutes per ¼-inch (6mm) of thickness. Do not exceed temperatures or recommended baking time.
Do not use in microwave oven.
Baking should be completed by an adult.
Wash hands after use.
