GAUGE

8 sts = about 4" (10 cm), with one strand each of A and B held tog.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

STITCH EXPLANATIONS

Popcorn Work four dc all in the same st, drop loop from hook, insert hook from front to back in first dc of the four-dc group just made, return dropped loop to hook and draw it through.

sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next strand draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all three loops on hook – one st decreased.

NOTES

1. Band and Hat are worked with one strand each of A and B held together.

2. Band is worked back and forth in rows, then the last row is joined to first row to form a circle.

3. Hat is worked in joined rnds, beginning along one long side of Band. Work Hat with RS always facing, do not turn.

HAT

Band

With one strand each of A and B held tog, ch 5.

Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beg ch does not count as a st) and in each ch across – three hdc at the end of this row.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, hdc in each st across.

Rep Row 2 until piece measures 16" (40.5 cm) from beg.

Hold first and last rows together, matching sts.

Ch 1, turn, working through both thicknesses, sl st in each st across to join. Do not fasten off.

Hat

Rnd 1: Ch 1, working in ends of rows across long side edge of band, work 40 sc evenly spaced; join with a sl st in first st.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc – 80 sts at the end of this rnd.

Rnd 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc),popcorn in next st, *dc in next st, popcorn in next st; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc.

Rnd 5: Rep Rnd 3.

Rnd 6–13: Rep Rnds 4 and 5 four times.

Rnd 14: Ch 1, *sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc – 60 sts at the end of this rnd.

Rnd 15: Rep Rnd 3.

Rnd 16: Ch 1, *sc in next st, sc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc – 40 sts at the end of this rnd.

Rnd 17: Rep Rnd 3.

Rnd 18: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch.

Rnd 19: Ch 1, *sc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in first st – 20 sts at the end of this rnd.

Rnd 20: Rep Rnd 18.

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through sts of last rnd and pull to gather. Knot securely.

FINISHING

Weave in ends.
