  • Flat paper stickers - alphabet

Project Instructions

  1. Make sure the mug is clean and dry. Use the border stickers to divide the mug into 7 vertical sections.
  2. In each section use a themed set of stickers to illustrate a type of story. Then use coordinating alphabet stickers to write what kind of story is being illustrated in each section. For example, use the train stickers for "Travel" or Valentine's stickers for "Romance".
  3. Once all the stickers are in place, apply a thin coat of Mod Podge® with the foam brush to the entire surface of the mug and let dry.

Craft Notes

Adult supervision is required at all times. The stickers and themes that were used are only just to get you started. Use your own creativity to come up with other themes and find other stickers to illustrate them.

Background

Students often have a difficult time coming up with ideas to write about. Story Mugs will take away the anxiety of coming up with a topic so that students can focus on the mechanics of writing. Decorate mugs with images for a variety of themes such as sports, animals, mystery, etc. Once the mugs are decorated, write story titles that fit each theme. Have students select a theme and a story title from the appropriate mug and then write a story to fit the title.
