Project Instructions

  1. Fold the paper into nine squares. Cut out squares from each corner.
  2. Cut construction paper into strips. Write four important events from a chosen folk story of a certain country on strips of paper and glue one event on each flap.
  3. Write the custom or information about the culture that the story focuses on in the center square.
  4. Label the order of the events on the other side of the events, first, second, third and fourth. Decorate the outside of the flaps with stickers or drawings from the appropriate story or country.

Background

Today's classrooms are more and more culturally diverse. Students from around the world are learning and playing together. Helping students understand other cultures is an important part of being a citizen in today's world. Folk stories are a fun and engaging way to explore other cultures. Have students share with the class their cultural backgrounds. Mark the different countries on a map. Then have students choose one of the countries represented, other than their own, to research and find a folk story. Once students have found their folk stories have them create a story web that illustrates the highlights of the story as well as what the folk story teaches us about its culture. Be sure to have students include culturally relevant objects or illustrations on their story webs.
