Project Instructions

 

Step 1 Bake, ice, and cover with fondant a two-tier cake according to the instructions for Wilton® Covering Round Cakes with Fondant Technique found on the Michaels.com website. However, tint the fondant a light blue with Wilton® icing colors. Knead to mix the color, but the color doesn’t need to be thoroughly mixed in—a bit of swirl adds to the watery look.

Step 2 Divide white fondant into five fist-sized balls. Keep one white. Mix colors into the others: yellow, pink, green, and turquoise. Cover with plastic wrap to keep moist.

Step 3 For the fish, roll out 1/8" thick disks of white fondant. Using the knife tool, cut out four angelfish shapes. Roll out 1/8" thick disks of yellow, green, pink, and turquoise fondant. Using the knife tool, cut out one oval from each to overlay the white angelfish shapes. Roll out 1/8" thick disks of black fondant. Using the knife tool, cut out four half moon shapes to overlay the angelfish front fins and four pie shapes to overlay the back fins. Create eyes from small balls of white and black fondant. Attach the shapes together with water. Attach to the cake with Dab-N-Hold™ edible adhesive.


Step 4 For the honeycomb coral, roll out 1/8" thick disks of yellow fondant. Use the knife tool to cut out holes. Attach to the cake with water.

Step 5 For the seaweed, roll out 1/8" thick disks of green fondant. Use the knife tool to cut out ½" strips. Wrap the strips around the handle of the knife tool to shape. Attach to the cake with water.

Step 6 For the branching coral, roll out tubes of the turquoise fondant with your hands. Press to flatten slightly. Use the quilling tool to create patterns. Attach to the cake with water.


Step 7 Using all but the white and black fondant, make shell and sand dollar shapes with the Sea Life Designs mold. Powder mold with powdered sugar. Roll out fondant. Press into mold and peel away. Attach shapes to the cake with water.


Step 8 Press brown sugar along base of both tiers of the cake for a sand look.
