Project Instructions

Step: 1

To prepare wood for woodburning, use sandpaper to sand wood surface to a smooth finish. Remove dust with a paper towel.

Step: 2

Use tape to attach pattern to top of plaque. Slide Graphite Paper (carbon side down) under pattern.

Step: 3

Use stylus or pen to trace lines of pattern. Use a metal ruler to trace rectangle lines surrounding thistle to insure straight lines. When complete, remove graphite paper and pattern.

Step: 4

Before using Creative Versa-Tool, read and follow all safety precautions on packaging. Attach Universal Point to Tool. Tighten with pliers. Secure stand to hard surface with tape. Place Tool on stand. Plug into electric outlet, press “ON” and heat for 4-5 minutes. Practice on a scrap of wood before beginning project to get a feel for the Tool. Use a light touch. Do not press hard, just let the Tool do the work and gently glide the Point over the wood.

Step: 5

Use Universal Point to burn all the traced lines except for the word Thistle. Use a metal ruler to make the straight lines of the rectangle. Hold ruler in place. Pull the Point along edge of ruler. Also burn a larger rectangle on the edge of the plaque using the metal ruler as a guide. When complete, turn Tool “OFF”. Use pliers to remove Universal Point.

Step: 6

Use pliers to attach Mini-Flow Point. Press “ON” and let heat. Use Mini-Flow Point to burn lines of the word Thistle. When complete, press “OFF”, unplug Tool and let cool.

Step: 7

Apply one coat of wood sealer with foam brush. Let dry.

Step: 8

Use fine sandpaper to lightly sand surface. A piece of brown paper bag can be used in place of sandpaper.

Step: 9

Apply 2-3 coats of spray varnish. Let dry between coats.

A new Universal Point is sometimes quite sharp. To make the point glide over the wood more smoothly, hold the point on an angle and run the edges over sandpaper a few times. Use this same procedure if the point gets a black build-up after use.
