Project Instructions

Step: 1

Sort through birch bark to find pieces that are easy to bend and shape. If sheets are too thick, carefully peel off thin layers of the birch from the back of an 8-inch x 10-inch sheet, beginning at the top of the sheet and gently lifting away several layers using the tip of a utility blade. When a portion large enough to grasp has been separated, hold front side of bark firmly on work surface and with the other hand carefully lift off layer, easing bark around knots and using utility knife if necessary.

Step: 2

Cut out patterns and use to cut out birch bark to fit around cones.

Step: 3

Using a generous amount of glue, attach the first edge of bark going straight down the side of the cone. Let glue harden and dry thoroughly before continuing. Firmly wrap and glue the bark around the cone. If needed, use straight pins to help hold the bark in place.

Step: 4

Trim away excess bark around the bottom edge, the tip, and at the sides with knippers or heavy duty scissors.

Tips

Use photo as a guide and follow manufacturer’s instructions for all products used.
