Project Instructions

  1. Fold the purple felt sheet in half. While felt is folded, draw a series of lines across the fold about 2-inches apart. Do not draw them all the way to the edge but leave about ½-inch at the edge.

  2. Starting on the folded end of the felt, cut along all the lines. When you unfold the felt, there should be a ½-inch border that is uncut.

  3. Cut 2-inch wide strips from pink felt that are as long as the width of the purple felt.

  4. Lay the purple felt on a table lengthwise. Starting at the upper left corner, weave a pink felt strip down through the first slit, up through the second, down through the third, and so on through all the slits.

  5. Weave the second strip of pink felt through the purple so it alternates from the first strip. Make sure that each new piece of felt is pushed up next to the previously woven piece.

  6. Continue weaving strips in this way until there's no room for any more strips.

  7. When you're done weaving, secure each strip of woven felt using glue. You might also have to trim the woven edges a bit to make the edges of the place mat even.

  8. For the heart-shaped utensil holder, print the heart patterns and cut out. Trace the smaller heart onto pink felt and the larger heart onto red felt. Cut out pieces. Glue only the edge of the "V" portion of the larger heart onto the mat as shown. This will leave a pocket to hold the utensils. Glue the smaller heart onto the larger heart as shown. Let dry.

Use chalk and a ruler to draw neat lines before cutting felt. Use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe chalk lines away when mat is complete.
