  • On joining new skein in variegated colors: Due to the long color sections, it will look best to join the new end of yarn in the same color with which knitting ended. Pull out (and wind into a ball) from the new skein until you get to the same part of the color sequence that you ended in.

  • Save that ball to use in another part of the sweater. Extra yarn has been allowed in the material quantities to allow for matching colors. No effort was made to match colors at fronts or side seams, etc.

  • For Seams: Homespun is somewhat slippery, so leave tails a bit longer than usual, about 3-inch for weaving in. BACK Cast on 71 (77, 85, 91) sts. Rows 1 & 3 (WS): P 1, *k 1, p 1, rep from * across. Row 2: K 1, *p 1, k 1, rep from * across. Change to broken rib pat. Work even until piece measures 11 (12, 13, 14)" from beg. Place a marker at each edge for sleeve placement. Cont until back measures 201/2 (22, 231/2, 25)-inches from beg. Bind off all sts.

  • LEFT FRONT Cast on 37 (41, 45, 49) sts. Work as for back until front measures 171/2 (19, 201/2, 22)-inches from beg, ending with a RS row. Shape neck: Bind off 7 sts at beg of next WS row. Work 1 row. Bind off 0 (3, 5, 7) sts at neck edge. Cont dec 1 st at neck edge every RS row 6 (5, 5, 5) times, working decs 3 sts in from neck edge -- 24 (26, 28, 30) sts rem. Work even, if necessary, until front measures same as back to shoulders.

  • Bind off all sts. Mark placement of buttons on left front, with bottom one ½-inch from lower edge, top one ½-inch from neck edge and evenly space 5 buttons between.

  • RIGHT FRONT Work as for left front, except working buttonholes to correspond with marked button placements as foll: On RS row, k 1,p 1, k 1, yo, k2tog, work in pat to end of row.

  • SLEEVES Cast on 31 (33, 35, 37) sts. Work 3 rows ribbing as for back. Cont in broken rib pat, inc 1 st at each edge every 4th row 17 (15, 15, 15) times, then every other row 0 (3, 4, 5) times -- 65 (69, 73, 77) sts. Work even, if necessary, until sleeve measures 171/2 (18, 18, 181/2)-inches or desired length. Bind off all sts.

  • FINISHING Sew shoulder seams. Sew sleeves to front and back between armhole markers. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.

Tip: SIZE Directions are for size Small (Medium, Large, X-Large).

Finished bust: 40 (44, 48, 52)".

GAUGE 14 sts = 4" in broken rib on size 10 needles. TO INSURE PROPER SIZE, BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

Broken Rib Pat Row 1 (RS): Knit. Row 2: P 1, *k 1, p 1, rep from * across. Rep Rows 1 and 2 for broken rib pat.
