Helmet Liner


Knitting a Helmet Liner is a heartfelt way to show support for troops serving abroad. Made with Patons® Classic Wool, it's a quick and easy project that will be greatly appreciated.
Note: It is important to use 100% wool to knit this liner as acrylic is flammable.

  • Patons® Classic Wool (3.5 oz/100g) 1 Ball #00205 Deep Olive
  • Sizes 4mm (U.S. 6) and 4.5mm (U.S. 7) Circular Knitting Needles, 16-inches [40.5cm] long or size needed to obtain gauge
  • 4mm (U.S. 6) Double-Pointed Knitting Needles (set of four) or size needed to obtain gauge

     Finished Size
To fit average soldier’s head.

 
     Gauge
20 sts and 26 rows = 4-inches [10cm] with larger needles in stocking st.

 
     Instructions
With smaller circular needle, cast on 84 sts loosely. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st.

 
     1st rnd: *K2. P2. Rep from * around.

 
     Rep last rnd of (K2. P2) ribbing until work from beg measures 5-inches [12.5cm].

 
     Divide for Face opening: 1st rnd: With larger circular needle, knit first 32 sts. Leave rem 52 sts on smaller circular needle. Cast on 56 sts. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st. 88 sts. Knit in rnds until work from dividing rnd measures 4-inches [10cm].

 
     Shape Top: 1st rnd: *K9. K2tog. Rep from * around. 80 sts.

 
     2nd and alt rnds: Knit.

 
     3rd rnd: *K8. K2tog. Rep from * around. 72 sts.

 
     5th rnd: *K7. K2tog. Rep from * around. 64 sts.

 
     Cont in this manner, dec 8 sts evenly around every following alt rnd until there are 8 sts, changing to double-pointed needles when appropriate. Break yarn, leaving a long end. Draw end tightly through rem sts and fasten securely.

 
     Front Ribbing: Rejoin yarn to sts on smaller circular needle. Rib across 52 sts from smaller circular needle. Pick up and knit 52 sts across cast on sts for face opening. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st. 104 sts.

 
     1st rnd: *K2. P2. Rep from * around.

 
     Rep last rnd of (K2. P2) ribbing 5 times more.

 
     Next rnd: *(K2. P2) twice. K2. P2tog. Rep from * to last 8 sts. (K2. P2) twice. 96 sts rem.

 
     Cast off knitwise.
