  • Lily Sugar'n Cream 4-ply Worsted Weight 100% Cotton, 2.5 oz or 2 oz balls, 4 balls
  • Button
  • Knitting needles, size 7 or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Knitting needles, size 9 or size needed to obtain gauge

  • SIZE: Finished width: 10.5 inches. Finished height: 11.5 inches.

 
  • GAUGE: 25 sts and 22 rows = 4 ins with 5.5 mm needles in basket weave pattern.

 
  • BAG BODY: With larger needles cast on 130 sts.

 
  • ***1st row: (Wrong side). Knit.

 
  • 2nd row: *Knit into back of 2nd st on left-hand needle, then knit into first st, slipping both sts off needle tog. Rep from * to end of row.

 
  • 3rd row: P1. *Purl into 2nd st on left-hand needle, then purl into first st, slipping both sts off needle tog. Rep from * to last st. P1. Last 2 rows form basket weave pat.***

 
  • Cont in basket weave pat until work from beg measures 10.75 ins ending with WRONG side facing for next row.

 
  • Change to smaller needles and proceed as follows: Next row: *P2. P2tog. Rep from * to last 2 sts. P2. 98 sts.

 
  • Next row: (Eyelet row). *K2. yfwd. K2tog. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2. Work 6 rows garter st (knit every row). Cast off knitways (wrong side).

 
  • BASE: **With larger needles cast on 8 sts.

 
  • 1st row: (Wrong side). *K1. yf Sl1P yb. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2.

 
  • 2nd row: *P1. yb Sl1P yf. Rep from * to last 2 sts. P2.**

 
  • 3rd row: K1. M1. *yf Sl1P yb. K1. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K1. M1. K1.

 
  • 4th row: P2. *yb Sl1P yf. P1. Rep from * to end of row.

 
  • 5th row: K1. M1. *K1. yf Sl1P yb. Rep from * to last st. M1. K1. Rep 2nd to 5th rows twice more. 20 sts.

 
  • Next row: *P1. yb Sl1P yf. Rep from * to last 2 sts. P2.

 
  • Next row: *K1. yf Sl1P yb. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2.

 
  • Rep last 2 rows until work from beg measures 7 ins ending with wrong side facing for next row.

 
  • Keeping cont of pat, dec 1 st each end of row on next and following alt rows until there are 8 sts. Work 1 row even in pat. Cast off. Place a marker at center of one long edge.

 
  • STRAPS (make 2): Work from ** to ** as given for Base. Rep last 2 rows until work from beg (when slightly stretched) measures 24.5 ins ending with right side facing for next row. Cast off.

 
  • POCKET: With larger needles cast on 44 sts. Work from *** to *** as given for Bag Body. Cont in basket weave pat until work from beg measures 6.75 ins ending with right side facing for next row.

 
  • Change to smaller needles and proceed as follows: Next row: *K2. K2tog. Rep from * to end of row. 33 sts. Work 6 rows garter st. Cast off knitways (wrong side).

 
  • POCKET FLAP: With smaller needles cast on 1 st.

 
  • 1st row: (Right side). Knit into front, back and front of st. 3 sts.

 
  • 2nd row: Knit.

 
  • 3rd row: (K1. M1) twice. K1.

 
  • 4th row: Knit.

 
  • 5th row: K1. M1. Knit to last st. M1. K1. Rep last 2 rows until there are 13 sts.

 
  • Next row: (Buttonhole row). K6. yfwd. Sl1. K1. psso. K5.

 
  • Next row: K1. M1. Knit to last st. M1. K1.

 
  • Next row: Knit. Rep last 2 rows 9 times more. 33 sts. Knit 1 row. Cast off knitways (wrong side).

 
  • FINISHING: Sew center back seam of Bag body. Sew Base to lower edge of Bag Body having center back seam at marker on Base.

 
  • Sew straps in position placing cast on ends side by side at top of Bag Body under eyelet row along center back seam and cast off ends along base seam at sides. Sew pocket and pocket flap in position as illustrated.

 
  • Sew button to correspond to buttonhole. Thread twisted cord through eyelet row on Bag Body.

 
  • To make twisted cord: Cut 4 strands of yarn 110 ins long. With all strands together hold one end and with someone holding other end, twist strands to the right until they begin to curl.

 
  • Fold the ends together and tie in a knot so they will not unravel. The strands will now twist themselves together. Adjust length if desired.

Tip: STITCH GLOSSARY
yf Sl1P yb = with yarn in front, slip next st purlways, then bring yarn to back.
yb Sl1P yf = with yarn in back, slip next st purlways, then bring yarn to front.
M1 = make one st by picking up horizontal loop lying before next st and knitting into back of loop.
