GAUGE: Gauge is not critical for this project.

In Stockinette stitch, 18 sts and 24 rows = 4”/10 cm; in stranded color work, 18 sts and 22 rows = 4”/10 cm

     SPECIAL TECHNIQUES

Stranded Knitting from Chart: While working from Chart, work RS rows from right to left, WS rows from left to right; change colors as shown on Chart, carrying color not in use loosely across WS of piece. To work from Chart, work edge st, work 12-st repeat 4 times, then edge st. If not lining bag, wrap colors carried over more than 3 or 4 sts to avoid long floats.

I-Cord: Using two double pointed needles, cast on 4 sts; DO NOT TURN. * Slide sts to the opposite end of the needle and knit them, pulling yarn firmly behind sts; repeat from * to desired length. After a few rows, you will see that you are knitting a tiny tube; give it a gentle tug now and then to adjust any loose sts. Bind off all sts, leaving a 12" tail for finishing.

     STITCHES USED

Stockinette stitch (St st): Knit on RS, purl on WS

Garter stitch (Garter st): Knit every row; 2 rows of Garter st = one Garter ridge.

     BACK and FRONT (both alike)

Using MC, cast on 50 sts.

(RS) Begin St st; work even for 2 rows.

(RS) Begin working from Chart, working solid color stripes in Garter st as indicated, 2-color Stranded sections in St st; work Rows 1 – 44 of Chart once.

Change to St st and MC for remainder of piece; work even until piece measures 14" from beginning, end with a RS row.

(WS) Turning Row: Knit 1 row.

(RS) Facing:Work even in St st for 6 rows.

     Bind off all sts loosely.

FINISHING: Using yarn needle, weave in ends. Sew side seams, matching pattern. Overcast lower edge with needle and thread (raw edges will be on outside). Lining: Cut a piece of fabric 11" by 28"; fold in half and sew side seams, using 1/4" each side for seam allowance. Insert lining into Bag, with the upper edge aligned with Turning Row; pin in place. Fold Facing to inside, over lining and sew neatly in place. Strap: Measure desired length of strap. Using Embellish Knit® or double pointed needles, work a cord twice desired length plus 20". Anchor one end of cord and twist tightly clockwise until it kinks; fold cord in half, add weight, and allow cord to twist counterclockwise. Knot both ends, leaving approximately 3" free below the knot. Cut folded edge and finish ends of cord so that they do not unravel. Securely sew knots at Bag sides, 2" down from opening.

Tassels (make 6 in colors of choice): Cut a piece of stiff cardboard, approx 4" long; wrap yarn around cardboard 30 times. Tie top with a 12" piece of yarn. Slip tassel off cardboard and cut lower end. Tie another piece of yarn around upper end of tassel, approximately 1/2"down from upper end. Trim tassel to a total length of 3". Sew one tassel to each Strap at the knot, using ends from first tie at upper end of tassel, and one Tassel to each end of strap below knots.

Fringe: Using MC, cut 52 strands, each 18" long. * Holding 4 strands together, fold in half. Insert crochet hook into both edges of lower edge of Bag, pull through loop; insert ends into loop and pull tight against edge. Repeat from * across lower edge, attaching a total of 13 fringes.

Tip: Learn to make i-cord on a cord-maker or with two knitting needles.
