Polymer Clay Hearts

These bold style heart pins are a great accent piece. The technique used is called mokume gane. Truly a work of art, and no two are ever alike.

  • Condition each color of clay.

  • Run each clay color individually through pasta machine or roll with acrylic roller to 1/8-inch thickness.

  • Cut clay into rectangles approximately 2½-inches x 3½-inches.

  • Alternately stack clay colors.

  • Using roller, compress and flatten clay. Roll excess pieces of clay into bullet shapes, with one end pointed. Place bullet shaped pieces of clay on a piece of aluminum foil and place in refrigerator to firm. With the handle end of the paintbrush, poke holes into the stacked clay.

  • Remove bullet shaped pieces from the refrigerator and poke into stacked piece of clay in holes made by the paintbrush handle. Press additional dents into clay with paintbrush handle. Turn clay stack over on working surface and press with roller to secure to surface.

  • Using the clay cutting blade, slice off thin pieces of the clay. It will be easier to cut thin slices if you hold the blade between the thumb and forefinger of one hand, curving the blade. Continue slicing until you have sliced most of the clay stack.

  • Roll a base piece of clay approximately 1/8-inch thick using excess clay. Place slices of the mokume gane on the base clay and smooth using the roller.

  • Using the heart shaped cookie cutter, cut out heart shapes. Smooth edges with fingers.

  • Place hearts on aluminum foil covered cookie sheet and bake in the oven following manufacturer's directions. Allow to cool.

  • Apply 2 coats of polymer clay glaze. Allow to dry. Glue pinback onto pin.

Tip: Use customary precautions when working with polymer clay.

Work on a nonporous surface.

Once items are used with polymer clay, dedicate them to clay use only.

A pasta machine, dedicated to clay use only will make conditioning the clay much easier.

Follow manufacturer's directions for all products used.
