Customer Reviews
Artist's Loft® White Gesso is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 49.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT USE WITH OIL PAINT For reference, I am a professional artist and art professor at a university in Canada. This product says it is designed for oil painting, so I picked it up while away from my normal art supply store thinking it would do the trick for some small oil paintings on panel. All paint and solvent applied to the gesso gets SOAKED INTO the surface very quickly, drying to the touch within MINUTES! Oil paint is NOT supposed to do this. This product SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR OIL PAINT. It will change the colour of the paint as it dries within minutes. Serious painters should NOT use this paint, even for small projects, it will ruin professional oil colours.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dries Fast Used it on large pieces of cardboards and it dried fast in the sun in less than 30min. But it does need two coats. We used roughly 2.5/5 of it's quantity. If I have to estimate on surface area use of the paint for cardboards, I think it does a good job of covering 24 ft length and 16 ft widths . What's that in surface area? No clue. I'm bad at math. Just know, it's alot of Gesso. Cost: Eh. Could be cheaper. Quality: Double coating but matches the price. Quantity: Large enough for a big trash can decorations. Texture: Super thick and glossy and gooey. Coat: Requires 2-3 coat for a solid hue. Math abilities: Furthest I took was calculus. Existential: I'm writing a review for Michael's and I'm a college student looking for a job .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This gesso is excellent This brand of gesso is perfect for working on any material - paper, wood, metal and glass. It is easy to coat anything with it, you can do it with a sponge or with a brush.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! This is such a great gesso!! Perfect deal! It works so good especially if you spray a teeny tiny bit of water

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Gesso This was a great base coating on the paintings my 5K class worked on. Overall it did great. But when applyed thick - it tended to crack in places.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Yep It's gesso I always mix it with water, it seemed a bit thinner, but it's off brand just use 3 coats

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not very opaque, but good tooth I bought this gesso because it seemed a good value for the money, but it leaked in shipment. There was enough still in the pail that I did use it to prime a few boards, and I have to say, it took several (like, four or five) coats to get a good, even, opaque coverage. Cost effectiveness is debatable at this point. It does still have decent tooth, though, so if you're just after it for the sealing and grabbiness, you'll be okay. (Also worth pointing out that the customer service staff were great and got things sorted out for me re: the shipping leak with no problems!)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Thin as paint, cracks when dry I bought the 64oz size. Even after shaking and stirring this is way too thin. It's more like the consistency of white latex house paint than real gesso. You should be able to get a nice big glob of gesso on your palette knife and turn it upside down with out the gesso falling off or dripping. This stuff literally runs off the palette knife like water. So if you're trying to create texture, it's useless. I tried coating a couple of small test canvases with it and both had extensive networks of cracks the next morning, another sign of low quality gesso. Not recommended.
