Project Instructions

Grades: K-6

Lesson Duration: 1 Day

Materials:

• Elmer’s Glue
• Foam letters or repositionable letters
• Camera
• Paper
• Elmer’s foam and/or corrugate board
• Removable picture hangers

Directions:
Find time throughout the day or use a parent volunteer to take a photograph of each child. Use the same backdrop (a solid colored wall) for best results. Have students stand with their legs slightly apart for the photo, have them hold their hands by their sides, palms facing the camera so when photographs get glued to the paper or board it appears as though students are reaching out to or holding one another’s hands.

Print each photo and cut out each body shape out. Use Elmer’s School Glue to glue the photographs straight onto the bulletin board paper or use Elmer’s colored foam board as your bulletin board.

Use foam or repositionable letters to create the title of the bulletin board.

Discuss what it means to be a classroom community. Establish classroom rules and add them to the board. In writing, ask each student to contribute one way he or she can be an active, supporting member of his or her classroom community. Hang their work around the bulletin board. Ask students to sign the bulletin board to show their support of being a positive part of the classroom community.

Wrap It Up:

Throughout the year, ask students to respond in other ways such as:

• What is one way you have seen a classmates helping another?
• What could you do to support your classmates?
• What have your classmates done to support you?
• What are some ways we can help our school community?
• What are some ways we can help our community outside of school?
• What are some ways our class has acted as a family this year?

Post their responses near the board.

If you have a “student of the week” each week, let the honoree create a small poster using Elmer’s foam or corrugate board to display along side the Classroom Community Bulletin Board.
