Project Instructions

To create this cozy hat you will be crocheting a panel and sewing each end together, and gathering along one edge to form the top of the hat. You’ll then crochet two ear flaps and attach, then trim entire hat with a red crochet trim.

Row 1: Using yarn color Granite Chain 22. Work single crochet in third chain from hook. Double Crochet in next stitch. Single Crochet in next stitch. Continue alternating single and double crochet stitches until end of row. 20 Stitches. Chain 1 and turn (in this and each row after).

Row 2-33: Double Crochet in next stitch, Single Crochet in next stitch, continue alternating single and double crochets to end of row. Continue with alternating stitches until you have 33 rows, OR enough rows so that it fits around the head snugly.

This alternating pattern of Single and Double Crochet creates an interesting textured pattern by Single Crocheting into the Double Crochet stitches and Double Crocheting into the Single Crochet stitches.

When panel is desired size, fasten off. Holding both short ends together, you will now stitch them together with yarn using a tapestry needle.

To gather one edge of the hat, thread needle with approximately 20 inches of yarn. Make a stitch along the edge of the panel and anchor. Continue weaving in and out along edge of panel and pull to gather tightly. Secure with several stitches and close up this end of the hat.

Ear Flaps (Make 2):

Row 1: Using yarn color Granite Chain 3, join with a slip stitch to form ring. Chain 2, 8 Half Double Crochet in ring. Chain 2 and turn.

Row 2: Half Double Crochet in next 2 stitches, 2 Half Double Crochet in next 3 stitches, one Half Double Crochet in next 3 stitches. Chain 2 and turn.

Row 3: Half Double Crochet in next 2 stitches, 2 Half Double Crochet in next 6 stitches, one Half Double Crochet in next 3 stitches. Fasten off and attach to sides of hat.

Reverse Single Crochet Edging:

Join Claret to edge of hat in back. Chain 1. Do not turn. From left to right, Single Crochet in each stitch around. Fasten off and hide ends.

Pom Pom:

Using yarn color Claret make a pom pom by wrapping yarn around 4 fingers 40 times. Cut yarn. Cut one piece of yarn about 10" long. Remove yarn from fingers.

Hold together in one hand and with other hand wrap 10" piece of yarn around middle of gathered yarn several times and tie, pulling tight. Secure tie and cut through loops on both sides of tie to form pom pom. Trim pom pom even on all sides. Attach to top of hat with tapestry needle and tie inside of hat.

You will need to create 2 ties which attach at ends of ear pieces.

Using yarn color Claret, cut 10 lengths of yarn approximately 36" in length. Fold in half and pull through bottom of ear piece with crochet hook. Pull free ends through this loop and pull taut. Divide into 3 sections and braid to end. Leaving about 3" at the end tie yarn around to secure.

Be sure to mark your rows so you know the count. These rows are difficult to see with this particular stitch combination.
