Project Instructions

Step 1 Copy the flag pattern onto tracing paper and trace onto the canvas using a ballpoint pen with graphic transfer paper between the tracing paper and the canvas. Repeat eight more times.

Step 2 Starting from the left of the garland, transfer the first leaf pattern onto the first flag in the same way as step one.

Step 3 Using a 3/8" flat brush, paint the background around the leaf, Lavender. Using a #1 flat brush, base coat the leaf Yellow.

Step 4 Using a ¼" angle shader, shade around the inside of the leaf with Orange and around the outside with Brown.

Step 5 Using the 10/0 liner brush, line around the outside of the leaf and the veins with Brown + Black 3:1. Paint the stem the same mixture as the veins.

Step 6 Using a pencil and ruler, mark 1" straight vertical lines across the second flag. Using a #6 flat brush, paint the stripes alternately White and Orange.

Step 7 Using the 10/0 liner brush, paint squiggle lines down the center of the White stripe with Spanish Olive.

Step 8 As in step one, transfer the pumpkin pattern onto the third flag.

Step 9 Using a 3/8" flat brush, paint the background around the pumpkin Ivory. Using a #1 flat brush, base coat the pumpkin Orange.

Step 10 Using the ¼" angle shader, shade around the inside of the pumpkin and along the ribs with Brown.

Step 11 Using the 10/0 liner brush, line around the outside of the pumpkin and the ribs with Brown + Black 3:1. Using a 10/0 spotter brush, paint the stem with the same mixture.

Step 12 Using a pencil and ruler, mark 1" horizontal lines across the fourth flag. Using a #6 flat brush, paint the stripes alternately Spanish Olive and White.

Step 13 Using the 10/0 liner brush, paint squiggle lines across the center of the White stripes with Orange.

Step 14 As in step one, transfer the leaf pattern onto the fifth flag. Using the 3/8" flat brush, paint the background around the leaf Yellow.

Step 15 Using the #1 flat brush, base coat the leaf Red + Orange 1:1.

Step 16 Using the ¼" angle shader brush, shade around the inside and outside of leaf and along the veins with Brown.

Step 17 Using the 10/0 liner brush, line the outside and veins with Brown + Black 3:1.

Step 18 Transfer the circles randomly on the sixth flag as explained in step one.

Step 19 Using the #1 flat brush, base coat the circles with Orange. Using the 10/0 liner brush, line around the circles with Lavender.

Step 20 Using the #1 flat brush, add a small brushstroke in the circle a little off center with Ivory.

Step 21 As in step one, transfer the sunflower pattern onto the seventh flag. Using the 3/8" flat brush, paint the background around the sunflower Lavender.

Step 22 Using the ¼" angle shader, shade around the inside of the sunflower and on the petals with Orange.

Step 23 Using the ¼" angle shader brush, shade around the outside of the flower and flower center with lavender. Shade around the outside of the petals with Brown.

Step 24 Using a pencil and ruler, mark 3/8", ¼" and 3/8" vertical lines down the eighth flag. Using a #1 flat brush, paint the first 3/8" stripe Orange, the ¼" stripe Spanish Olive and leave the second 3/8" stripe White. Repeat across the entire flag.

Step 25 As in step one, transfer the leaf pattern onto the ninth flag. Using the 3/8" flat brush, paint the background around the leaf Ivory.

Step 26 Using the #1 flat brush, base coat the leaf Orange. Using the ¼" angle shader, shade around the outside and along the veins with Brown.

Step 27 Using the 10/0 liner brush, line around the leaf and the veins with Brown + Black 3:1.

Step 28 Fold the top of each flag over ½" and pushing the fold against the back of the flag from the center outwards, staple each side of the top folded part to the back of the flag.

Step 29 Trim the folded corners that show on the front of the flag even with the sides.

Step 30 Put a knot on one end of the jute cord, and then put another knot 11" from the first one.

Step 31 Starting from the end without any knots, string the first flag up against the second knot. String the rest of the flags in order on the 85" length of jute cord, spacing them ½" apart.

Step 32 Tie a knot at the end of the last flag and another knot 11" away. Trim ½" from the end of the last knot.

Step 33 Sand the letters with 120 grit sandpaper. Remove dust with a damp paper towel.

Step 34 Paint the letters with Brown + Black 3:1.

Step 35 After letters are dry adhere the “F” to the second flag; the “a” to the fourth flag; the “L” to the sixth flag and the “l” to the eighth flag Using E-6000®.

Tips

Fold the tops of the flags down ½" and staple the ends, pushing down from the center outwards. When painting, use as many coats as necessary to cover completely.
