Project Instructions

step 1Abbreviations

beg = begin(ning)(s) ch = chain hdc = half double crochet rep = repeat rnd(s) = round(s) sk = skip sl st = slip stitch sp(s) = space(s) st(s) = stitch(es) tr = treble (triple) crochet
step 2Size

Finished Hat Circumference About 20 in. (51 cm), will stretch to fit a range of sizes. Scarf About 6 1/2 x 66 in. (16.5 x 167.5 cm)

Gauge 10 hdc = 4 in. (10 cm).

Be sure to check your gauge. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to match the gauge, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
step 3Stitch Explanation

hdc2tog (hdc 2 sts together) (Yarn over, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.
step 4Notes:

1. Hat is worked in the rnd, beg at lower edge. 2. Scarf is worked back and forth in rows.
step 5Hat

Note: If you find it difficult to join the beg ch into a ring without twisting the ch, Rnd 1 can be worked as a row, then joined into a rnd, as follows: Leaving a long beg tail, ch 51, hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beg ch counts as first hdc), hdc in each ch across; join with sl st in first hdc – 50 hdc at the end of this rnd. Use beg tail to sew gap at base of first row closed. Proceed to Rnd 2. Ch 50; taking care not to twist ch, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 2 (counts as an hdc in this rnd and in all following rnds), hdc in each ch around; join with sl st in top of beg ch – 50 hdc at the end of this rnd. Rnds 2 and 3: Ch 2, hdc in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch. Rnd 4: Ch 4 (counts as tr in this round and in all following rnds), tr in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch. Rnd 5: Ch 4, working in sps between sts, beg in sp between the beg ch-4 and the next tr, tr in each sp around to last sp, sk last sp; join with sl st in top of beg ch – 50 tr. Rnd 6: Rep Rnd 2. Rnds 7-11: Rep Rnds 2-6. Shape Top of Hat Rnd 12 (Decrease Rnd): Ch 2, hdc in next 2 sts, hdc2tog, *hdc in next 3 sts, hdc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch – 40 sts. Rnd 13 (Decrease Rnd): Ch 2, hdc in next st, hdc2tog, *hdc in next 2 sts, hdc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch – 30 sts.

Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.
step 6Scarf

Ch 17. Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beg ch counts as first hdc), hdc in each ch across – 16 sts. Rows 2 and 3: Ch 2 (counts as hdc in this row and in all following rows), turn, hdc in each st across, working last hdc in top of beg ch. Row 4: Ch 4 (counts as tr in this row and in all following rows), turn, tr in each st across, working last tr in top of beg ch. Row 5: Ch 4, turn, working in sps between sts, sk first sp, tr in each sp across, tr in top of beg ch. Row 6: Rep Row 2.

Rep Rows 2-6 until piece measures about 66 in. (167.5 cm) from beg, end with a Row 3. Note: End with a Row 3 means that the last row you work should be a Row 3.

Fasten off.
