Project Instructions

This is a great technique, you’ll use over and over. Layering is an easy way to make unique colored bars. Before you get started, first determine how many layers of color you want to create, and if you want to use clear soap, white soap or both in your finished bar. For this project three layers were made, and a 2 lb. brick of clear soap plus a 2 lb. brick of white soap were used. Oatmeal was used in this recipe so be sure to use one of the suspending white soap bases if you plan to use oatmeal also. There will be some clear soap left over when you are done. To help the layers stay together, you should have a spray bottle of alcohol on hand.

Step 1
For assembling the loaf, place one of the long grooved sides flat on the table with the groove facing up. Place the two short grooved pieces into the wide grooves on either end of the longer piece on the table with the grooves facing in. Slide the solid bottom of the mold into the grooves taking care that the bottom is snugly in place. Take the other long side and place it on top making sure the grooved side is facing down. Place the screws into the slots and slowly tighten them so that the mold is held together snugly. Be careful not to tighten the screws too much or the mold will bend out of shape and leak.

Step 2
For layer one, melt fragrance and color 16 cubes (about 2 cups) of clear soap according to melting instructions. For sample shown, 30 drops of vanilla fragrance and about ¾ teaspoon of cinnamon (to color the soap) were used. Be sure to mix well.

Step 3
Pour into the loaf mold and let set approximately ½ hour. If you see bubbles, just spritz with alcohol and the bubbles will disappear.

Step 4
For the second layer, prepare by melting 16 cubes (about 2 cups) of white suspension soap. It is very important that you use one of the white suspension bases since you will be suspending oatmeal. A Shea Butter base works best but the Goat Milk base works just as well.

Step 5
Add fragrance and cinnamon. For sample shown, 30 drops of vanilla fragrance and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon were used. Mix thoroughly.

Step 6
Add 1 packet of instant oatmeal. Mix well. To help layers stick together, spray the cooled layer lightly with rubbing alcohol before pouring the second layer. Pour melted oatmeal soap into mold over the clear layer that has set. Don’t forget to spritz alcohol if you see bubbles. Let it cool just like you did the previous layer. It will take approximately ½ hour.

Step 7
For the final layer, melt, fragrance and color the remaining 16 cubes (about 2 cups) of white suspending soap according to melting instructions. For sample shown, approximately 30 drops of vanilla fragrance and ½ teaspoon of cinnamon were used.

Step 8
After mixing really well, add a packet of instant oatmeal and mix again to make sure everything is well blended. Be sure to spritz the set layer with alcohol before pouring this final layer on top.

Step 9
Take another packet of instant oatmeal and sprinkle it over the top of the loaf. Finish by then lightly sprinkling some cinnamon on top of that.

Step 10
Be sure to let the soap set really well. Wait about an hour or two and then disassemble the loaf mold.

Step 11
Slice the loaf into bars of your desired thickness.

Step 12
Wrap with clear plastic wrap to preserve the freshness of the bar until ready to use it.
