Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130°C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use.
Begin by preheating oven to 275°F (130°C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. Condition all clay by kneading with your handles till smooth and elastic. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Step 1 Condition the Frost White Glitter clay. To use the extruder: Fill the extruder with clay. The extruder comes with five round hole discs. Use the third largest. To make extruding easy, try this: use a towel and place the extruder vertical, using the towel over the curved area where you place your hands to push. Then put your weight on the extruder. This really works great!
Create all the pieces described below: Place pieces on a piece of waxed paper. Here are the pieces you will need:
· (7) small spirals using extruded pieces that are approximately 1½"
· (6) 3½" extruded pieces
· (6) 1½" extruded pieces
· (12) small balls (pinky nail sized)
· (30) tiny balls (using an extruded piece, cut little equal sized pieces and then roll into balls)
Step 2 Set the 3" circle snowflake template under the glass. You may want to secure it with a small piece of tape at the top so it doesn’t slide. This template is just a guide to help keep your snowflake uniform and symmetrical.
Step 3 Start by placing one spiral right in the center. On a paper plate or small cup squeeze out some Sculpey® Bake and Bond and get a toothpick ready. For every piece added to the snowflake apply a little bit of Bake and Bond to where it makes contact with the other clay. This will just help ensure that the snowflake stays together. (Don’t add too much, it can ooze out and makes things kind of messy).
Step 4 Now take a 3½" extruded piece and bend it from the center. Take the ends and curl them outwards to make a small loop on both sides. Position this in one of the pie-shaped triangles on the template up against the center spiral. Continue this process with all of the 3½" pieces. Now make the looped ends meet to form a kind of heart shape. Once these pieces are all positioned and looking even, the rest is easy
Step 5 Next add the six larger balls that you made to the base of each of your extruded looped pieces. Pushing gently and of course using a bit of Bake and Bond to secure.
Step 6 Next add six tiny balls to the bottom middle of the looped heart shapes.
Step 7 Now add a 1½" extruded pieces. These may have to be trimmed after you place them. These are placed in between the looped extruded pieces, securing tips with Bake and Bond.
Step 8 Add the last six large balls to the top of the looped hearts. These will be going in between the 1½" pieces that you just put on.
Step 9 Add a tiny ball to the top of each of those, always using the Bake and Bond to secure.
Step 10 Add the six remaining spirals. These go on top of the 1½" extruded pieces. Gently push against the 1½" strip to give it a little wave and to secure.
Step 11 Lastly use the remaining tiny balls and secure them on either side of the spirals and then place one on top.
Step 12 Now make a wire loop and add some Bake and Bond. Gently push loop into the top of one of the spirals.
Step 13 Bake as directed above. Once cooled, coat with Sculpey® Gloss Glaze. This helps bring out the sparkle in the clay. Add a ribbon to hang the ornament.
