tl;dr Great paint. Not my personal favorite primary triad, but it might be yours. Paint and ink both use the subtractive color model.  

As with every other DS watercolor, these are great paints. However, I do agree with the first reviewer; these are not primary. Or, at least, this is not the only primary triad out there. For really clear and vibrant oranges, purples, and greens, you actually *do* need something close to cyan, magenta, and yellow. No, watercolors are not ink, but they do both use the same color model--subtractive color. CMYK, as a color theory, also works with watercolors. I don't have a red on my palette, but I do have yellow and quin rose.

That's not to say that these 3 colors won't give you various shades of orange, green, and purple. They will, and maybe those shades are perfect for your style and subject matter. That's awesome! You have a set already made for you! Buy this set and go forth and paint and be happy! Personally, I like vibrant, translucent colors--this particular triad will not create that. If you find that you can't quite get the colors you want with this set, an alternative triad could be Quin Rose (PV19), a mid yellow (Hansa Yellow Medium, included in this set, is often used), and Phthalo Blue GS (PB15:3). And there are countless other options beyond that too. 

Research the pigments. Read about the palettes used by artists you like. Experiment with the paint yourself. Make color charts and do color studies. Find what works for you. There's room for multiple primary triad variations out there, we don't all have to agree on which one is "best," because "best" is dependent on too many variables to even begin to list here.

I agree with the other guy/gal printer ink is not the same as watercolor and also the title of the color doesn't matter it's what you do with them that do so before you give a bad review make sure to acually try out the product instead of basing a book by its cover

Actually an artist

To the person that gave this product a 1 star rating for supposedly not being primarily colors. Stop watching YouTube trash and actually paint something. Humans aren't printers and print color theory differs from paint/artist color theory. Stop getting aggressive because you read an ink cartridge. Watercolors aren't ink and vise versa. This product didn't deserve a one star review because of your knee jerk arrogant indignation. I can't afford DS watercolor, but I know people that swear by it. I'm sure it is a fine product. If you want to try before you buy, there are sample cards available for $7 on this site. Painters have always used these colors because they are natural primaries. Unlike ink that uses dye, paint actually uses ground partials commonly know as pigments. For the most part these pigments are found from natural sources and in the old world rare in the case of blue. Lapas was a main source of blue pigments in the past and expensive. This is why color theory in painting is with these Colors as primary. Ever used the CMYK to make a rich EARTHY green? Takes forever and you can muddy the color quite easy. If you're a printer, these are not your primary. If you're a human then you're in luck.

Fed Artist

The primary colors for paint/ink/etc are Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow, NOT red/yellow/blue. Look at your printer ink, it's CMY, not RYB. The definition of primary is that the color can not be mixed. Red is made by mixing Magenta with a touch of yellow, and Blue is made with Cyan and a touch of Magenta. This is color theory 101. If you buy this set expecting to be able to mix other colors, your results will be dull and muddy. D.S. should be ashamed calling this set  "primary" colors.
