Project Instructions

Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F for 30 minutes per ¼" thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use.

Begin by preheating oven to 275°F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.

Using ½ block of Premo! Sculpey® Alizarin Crimson, form a rope. Using 1/8 block of Premo! Gold, form another rope the same length. Twist the two together and roll them. Roll and stretch until the length is approximately tripled. Fold the log into thirds and twist and roll again. Repeat the process until the colors are well marbled and form a log about ½" diameter.

Using the Sculpey® Super Slicer rigid blade, cut four pieces from the log each approximately 1" and smooth and round edges to form tube beads. Cut four more pieces slightly shorter and roll them into balls. Using a toothpick, pierce through the tube and ball beads.

Using Premo! Gold clay, roll out a narrow sheet about 1/16" thick and 4-6" long. Using the Sculpey® texture wheel with the leaf and vine pattern, roll the pattern along the length of the sheet with moderate pressure.

With the Sculpey® Super Slicer rigid blade nearly horizontal to the clay surface, pull the blade towards you, shaving the raised portion of the pattern off the surface.

Using the plastic roller, roll across the pattern to smooth any irregularities on the surface. Using the Sculpey® Super Slicer rigid blade, trim close to the edge of the pattern on each side. Wrap the patterned strip around the log and trim the edges to just meet. Roll gently on surface to adhere the patterned strip to the base bead and reshape if necessary.

Using the Sculpey® Texture Wheel with the rope pattern, create additional patterned strips, repeating the previous 3 steps. Wrap the strips around the widest portion of the round beads.

Create a snake of Premo! Alizarin Crimson slightly smaller than ¼" diameter and 2" long. Using the Sculpey® Super Slicer rigid blade, cut into eight beads and pierce each.

Bake all the beads for 30 minutes at 275° F in your home oven.

When cooled, string the beads on stretchy string. Tie a knot in the cord, add a drop of clear, fast setting glue and pull the knot back inside the nearest bead.

Baby wipes are a great way to clean your hands after working with clay!
