  • T-Shirt, 100% Cotton – Pink
  • Chalk Pencil
  • Disposable Plastic Table Cover
  • Zip Ties

Project Instructions

Step 1 Wash T-shirt without fabric softener and do not dry.

Step 2 Cover work surface with plastic tablecloth.

Step 3 Lay out damp T-shirt on covered work surface.

Step 4 Fold shirt in half lengthwise, neckline to hem.

Step 5 On front side of shirt, use chalk pencil to draw half a heart shape with a center vertical line of heart being the fold of your T-shirt.

Step 6 Starting at the bottom of half heart shape, begin making small (1" tall) pleats along chalk line, pulling the shirt/chalk line into a straight line as you pleat. You will end with the half heart chalk line pleated into a short straight line. Secure tightly with a zip tie at this line.

Step 7 Add more zip ties after your first one if concentric heart designs are desired.

Step 8 Wearing protective gloves from package, mix One-Step dyes according to package instructions.

Step 9 Apply red One-Step dye to pleated heart section of shirt until dye is approximately 1" from first zip tie.

Step 10 Apply violet One-Step dye to first 2-3" of T-shirt after your first zip tie.

Step 11 Apply blue One-Step to rest of T-shirt.

Step 12 Wrap shirt in plastic table cover and let set 6-8 hours.

Step 13 Run shirt under the water in the sink until all the dye is out. The dye is out when the water runs clear! Cut off zip ties and place shirt by itself in the washer and set to large load. Put it on the hottest water suitable for fabric and use a little laundry detergent. Dry in dryer or line dry.
