upcycling: embroidered craft cups

Step 1
Total Project Time: 2 Hours

Quantities Needed for this Project:2 - Recycled Soup Cans

Project Note: Some cans have very sharp lips on the inside. Handle with care to avoid injury.
Step 2
Embroidery Stitches:

BACKSTITCH: Bring your threaded needle up through a hole in the chipboard and pull the thread through. Now, stitch down into the next hole behind that one (towards you, not away from you), pulling the excess thread down. Next, bring your needle up through the hole in front of the first hole you stitched into. Stitch back down into the first hole to finish your second stitch. Continue in this fashion and take a look at our video on basic embroidery stitches below for a demonstration.

CHAIN STITCH:  Bring your threaded needle up through a hole in the chipboard, pulling thread through. Stitch back down through the same hole, but leave a loop of thread above the chipboard that is large enough to surround the next stitch hole. Stitch up through the next hole, making sure that your needle is inside the loop of thread left on the surface. Pull up your thread, tightening the loop to remove all slack. Stitch down through the same hole (through the tightened loop), leaving another loop on the surface as you pull down the thread. Again, stitch up through the loop, tighten the loop and then stitch down through the same loop to complete the stitch. Continue in this fashion until your stitch line is complete.
Step 3
Remove outer paper wrapping from cans and clean thoroughly. Set aside to dry.
Step 4
Flatten the inner rim or lip of the can with flat nose pliers, if needed.
Step 5
Measure and cut the height and width of your soup cans, plus 1" on the width, and cut out that measurement from a piece of chipboard.
Step 6
Place the soup can in the center of the chipboard and trace around the rim for a perfect circle.
Step 7
Draw a picture of the supplies your cup will hold in the circle you traced in Step 6.

TIP: The template of the crayon and pencil from this project is available for download at michaels.com. If you prefer to use a template, print out design, cut it out and trace it in the center of the circle you traced in Step 6.

Step 8
With your embroidery needle, punch holes about ¼" apart to outline the design and the circle. Do not just poke a hole, be sure to pull the needle completely through each hole that you punch.
Step 9
Cut a piece of thread that is about 18" long and thread your embroidery needle. Leave a tail that is about 4" long.

TIP: Do not knot your thread. As you take your first stitch, hold a 1½" tail under the chipboard with your finger for the first few stitches until it is firmly in place. This will avoid bulky lumps underneath your can covering.
Step 10
Use the backstitch technique to embroider the design and the chain stitch for the circle.
Step 11
When you complete your stitch line or reach the end of your thread, stitch through two or three stitches on the underside of your work to keep the thread from unravelling, and trim the tail. Re-thread as necessary.
Step 12
When your embroidery is complete, use the glue stick to apply glue to the underside of the chipboard.
Step 13
Wrap the chipboard tightly around the can, until it is completely covered. Hold the seam for a few minutes until the glue has set and the chipboard stays in place.

TIP: Use masking tape to hold the chipboard closed for a half hour until the glue is completely dry, then remove.
