acrylic welcome sign

Planning a modern wedding? Then greet your guests with this clear acrylic welcome sign. We’ll show you how to trace letters and add a bit of paint to create your own eye-catching greeting. It’ll have them smiling for sure – and you, too (because it’s just so easy to make)!
Step 1
Project Note: Did you know we carry sheets of clear acrylic in our custom framing department? We’ve got a variety of pre-cut sizes for you to choose from. Just drop by and order what you need!

Visit the custom framing counter at your favorite Michaels store, select the size you need for your sign, and place your order.

TIP: In case you’re wondering, the sign in the featured image is 16" x 20".
Step 2
Create the template for your sign on your computer and print it out. If you prefer to hand letter your template on a piece of paper, that’s great, too!

TIP: Just make sure to size your template design so that it’ll fit on your acrylic piece.

Step 3
You can see that your acrylic piece is covered on each side with a sheet of adhesive backing. Peel this backing away on one side only and discard.
Step 4
Now, place your template design flat on your working surface and place the acrylic piece on top. (Don’t worry – you’ll still be able to read and trace the template underneath.) Its remaining protective sheet should be face down.

TIP: Leave the second protective sheet on your acrylic piece until you set it out at your venue, to help protect it from scratching.
Step 5
Trace your design with paint markers in the colors you’ve selected, and let the piece dry.

TIP: Before you begin tracing, take a minute or so to shake each paint pen. Prime each pen by gently pressing its tip onto a piece of scrap paper. Push the barrel up and down until the paint appears at the tip. Now you’re ready to trace!
Step 6
Once the sign is completely dry, turn the acrylic piece over. Use a foam brush to paint a loose pattern of brushstrokes onto the back side of the acrylic, so that it frames and highlights the sign’s lettering from behind. Let this paint dry, too. Absolutely lovely!
