art journaling with jane davenport

Do you keep a journal? Art journaling is all about making art that’s just for you. There’s no need to plan things out – just grab your favorite art supplies, open up your notebook and go! Let artist and author Jane Davenport walk you through the basics. We know you’ll have fun!
Step 1
Open your journal to a clean sheet of watercolor paper. Take a moment to think of all the possibilities! There are no rules in art journaling so, for this project, choose the colors and materials that inspire you.

TIP: Remember that oil-based and wax-based mediums (like oil paints and crayons, for instance) will stick to acrylic-based mediums, but not the other way around.
Step 2
Grab your favorite color of matte acrylic paint, and use a brush to paint the entire page.
Step 3
Pick out a different color in the same color family (either warm or cool). Squeeze paint straight from the tube, to add loose swatches of color all over your page.
Step 4
With a slightly damp paintbrush, spread the second color around on the page. Blend it as much (or as little!) as you like.
Step 5
Take a look at your colorful page and decide which section is your favorite. Recreate this section by adding more of the same color(s) across the page.
Step 6
Now choose a contrastingcolor, and add it to the page here and there.

TIP: When we say there are no rules in art journaling, we mean NO RULES! Feel free to create small marks, big swatches, patterns, shapes or whatever you feel like making at the moment.
Step 7
While your paint is drying, pick out some crayons that will stand out against the colors you’ve added to your page.
Step 8
Make some fun, patterned marks. Loops, dots, scallops, zigzags, circles or any kind of doodle you enjoy drawing is perfect.
Step 9
Next, use a paint marker to loosely sketch a focal point on your page. It could be a face, an animal, a flower, even a letter, or another doodle. It’s up to you!
Step 10
Switch out your paint markers to add more color and dimension that bring your subject to life! Keep working until you’re happy with your page. When you’re done, you’re done! Great job!
