birthday party: mad science t-shirt smock

Kids will go mad for this mad scientist smock.
Step 1
Smooth out the T-shirt on a flat surface. If necessary, iron to remove any wrinkles.
Step 2
First, draw the lab coat opening. With the brush tip Sharpie® marker and ruler, draw a line onto the right side of the T-shirt, halfway between the center front and side seam of the shirt. The line should run vertically from the bottom hem to a spot just below the lowest point
Step 3
Draw a second, diagonal line that connects the first line to the collar edge. Use the project image as a guide. Draw buttons on the left side of the line, as shown in the project image.
Step 4
Next draw the lab coat pocket. Use the Sharpie® marker and a ruler to draw a rectangle on the left side of the shirt, at chest level. Draw a second line about 1½" below the top horizontal line to make a pocket cuff, and add a stitch line just above this second line. Below the cuff line, draw a rectangle for an ID tag. Write your mad scientist’s name inside the rectangle.
Step 5
To make the glasses, select four chenille stems in your scientist’s preferred colors. We used light green and dark green. Weave and twist them around each other to create one very thick stem, but leave about 2" of one of the chenille stems sticking out at the end. You will use this 2" piece to create the bridge that holds the lenses together.
Step 6
Wind the thick stem around a bottle or jar to get a perfect circle shape, then twist the ends of the stems together (except the one chenille stem that you are using for the bridge) to complete the circle. Make sure any scratchy ends are fully tucked in or snipped away. Repeat to make a second lens.
Step 7
Place the two lenses so that each 2" portion of the chenille stem is situated in the center, directly facing the other stem. Now, wind and twist these stems together to create the glasses’ bridge, checking with your mad scientist to ensure that it’s the right size and shape to fit over her or his nose. Twist any excess on either side around the lens on that side, and trim or tuck the very end so it cannot scratch.

Step 8
Twist another chenille stem onto one of the lenses exactly opposite from the bridge. Bend and shape the stem into an end piece, and bend the very end so that it will curl around the scientist’s ear. Repeat for the second end piece.
