cactus cookies

Is this a desert or is it dessert? It’s hard to tell – until you take that first bite! Then? Yum! We’ll show you exactly how to make these tasty cactus cookie cuties – it’s super-easy with the right cookie cutter from Wilton®. Let’s get started!
Step 1
Prepare a batch of roll-out cookie dough by following your favorite recipe.

TIP: If you need a great recipe for cookie dough, Wilton® has one ready for you, click here

Step 2
Roll out the dough, then cut out your cookie shapes using the cactus cookie cutter. Bake according to your recipe’s directions, then let the cookies cool completely.
Step 3
Next, prepare buttercream icing according to your favorite recipe.

TIP: Looking for a great buttercream icing recipe? Wilton® has a classic right here.
Step 4
Once your icing is finished, divide it up and color it as follows:
   -  Tint ½ cup of icing light green
   -  Tint ½ cup of icing dark green
   -  Tint ¼ cup of icing rose
   -  Tint ¼ cup of icing orange
   -  Tip ¼ cup of icing yellow
   -  Reserve ¼ cup of icing to remain white
Step 5
Now it’s time to separate your icing colors into disposable decorating bags. Prepare one decorating bag with tip #1, then place white icing in this bag.
Step 6
Place a decorating tip #3 in the bottom of each of five decorating bags. Cut the tip of each bag so that the decorating tip fits snugly (just like in the package directions).
Step 7
Place each of the remaining colors of icing into a separate bag.

TIP: If you’ve only got one decorating tip #3, that’s ok! You’ll just need to prepare each bag one at a time, when that color is needed.
Step 8
Icing time! First, use the light green icing to pipe straight vertical lines onto the middle stem of each cactus.
Step 9
Next, use dark green icing to outline the middle stem of each cookie. Now, repeat Steps 8 and 9 for the side branches on either side of each cookie.
Step 10
Use the white icing to pipe dot spikes onto each cactus cookie.
Step 11
Finally, add bead flowers to the tip of each cactus cookie with rose, yellow or orange icing. (If you’d like to add more than one bead flower to some of the cookies, we won’t tell!) Delicious!
