30 Watercolor Flower Studies for Painting Practice, Part I

In each session of this three-part class, the instructor will walk you through the steps to sketch, paint watercolor layers, and add details using watercolor and white gouache to 10 of 30 flower studies or small watercolor flower paintings on large watercolor paper. All thirty flower images are provided for this class with three separate pdfs containing 10 images each attached to each class session. Part I will cover instructions for images 1-10, Part II will cover images 11-20, and Part III will cover images 21-30. If time allows, the instructor may return to studies from part I or II to add details or additional layers.

A tracing transfer method will be shared using graphite and tracing paper if you prefer to trace your sketches and focus more on the process of watercolor painting with your flower studies. For an extra challenge, you can preserve white areas using the blank watercolor paper if you prefer not to add white gouache.

Results will vary based on existing drawing and painting skills.

You will learn the importance of working in layers when painting with watercolor, develop color mixing and matching skills, and gather countless tips and tricks for suggesting flower details rather than painstakingly rendering each detail. By working on 10 small studies (or more) at one time on the same page, you will be able to stay busy while allowing wet layers to dry on your studies as you go. This will not be a linear one-a-day painting challenge, but rather an exercise in creating a sustainable and long-term watercolor practice. It is unlikely the instructor will fully develop all thirty flower studies on camera, but instructions and guidance will be given to support you in completing all thirty studies at your own pace.
