Acrylic Painting Basics: Two Ways to Begin a Monochromatic Painting, Part I

Learn two ways to create an underpainting, or the groundwork for a painting, using monochromatic color and acrylic paint. This class will cover the basics of painting a value scale in one color, how to sketch and plan for a painting, some composition tips, and two methods for getting started on an underpainting.

The first method covered will be the practice of using thinned out paint to sketch the underpainting and then fill in values with light washes. The second method covered will be using a tone or ground of one color and then building light and dark value shapes on top of this tone. Both of these painting methods will include a demo on a dry brushing technique called scumbling to create a vignette effect in these two studies. This is a two part class. Both underpainting methods will be started in part I of the class and then continued and developed further in part II of this class.
