Class Description

Learn how to use line weight to optimize your mark making and improve your drawing skills. Line weight is the relative thinness or thickness of a line in a drawing. By varying the line weight in a drawing, you can add depth and character to a subject and create more interesting compositions.

This class will explore line weight using a series of blind contour line drawings of objects, hands, & faces with a variety of materials. Blind contour line drawings are continuous line drawings done without picking up the drawing material and primarily keeping eyes on the subject/not looking at the drawing paper. Due to the ""blind"" nature of this drawing exercise, an artist often puts a varying amount of pressure on the drawing material without thinking about it-resulting in a variation in line weight as a by-product. By using a lot of different materials to execute this drawing practice-graphite pencils, charcoal pencils, permanent markers, brush pens, and a paintbrush & ink, the results will be numerous and the likelihood of understanding and capturing interesting line weights in these drawings will be inevitable.
