Part one of a two-part class. Instructor Adrienne Hodge will teach you how to paint a still life with a focus on value shapes. You will use instructor-provided photos that extensively highlight and emphasize these organic value shapes. The instructor will guide you through drawing this image or doing a tracing paper transfer of the sketch onto watercolor paper. You will then complete a palette of light and dark shades of orange and blue. Next, you will begin layering thin washes of dark and light colors onto your watercolor painting. Watercolor painting takes time. As each layer dries, you will use the reference images to study the dark and light values of color in this still life in order to work your way from the background to the foreground. You will walk away from this class with 1-3 layers of watercolor on your painting and a workflow you can adopt and apply to future still life painting.
