clay faux agate embellished wood box

Keep your treasured adornments in this adorned jewelry box decorated with geodes you create yourself from clay.
Step 1
Paint the exterior of the wood box with black gesso. Apply two coats, allowing time to dry in between.

Paint the rim of the lid with Gold gilding. Let dry.
Step 2
To create the agates, you will begin with a package of Opal, Black, White, Gold, and Gray Granite clay. Condition each package of clay by rolling the clay in your hands until it has softened. Do this one at a time and set aside.

Use an acrylic roller to roll each ball of clay out flat until they are about ¼" thick.

Roll through a pasta machine at varying thicknesses, between the 3 and 5 settings. Or roll each ball out totally flat with the roller and make sure the clay is even.

Use a clay cutter to cut each flattened color of clay into strips that are 4"–6" long and 2" wide.
Step 3
Tear off a small piece of foil and crumple it into a tube shape that is 1" thick and 3"–5" long. Make sure the foil is not too dense when you roll it, or it will be too thick to cut through.

Take a strip of clay and wrap it around the foil tube. Trim at the seam so there is no overlapping. Press the first clay layer gently onto the foil. Repeat this step and add a second layer over the first. Continue to layer the clay strips around the foil, one strip at a time, lightly pressing each layer onto the next.
Step 4
Once at least five layers have been applied, put the clay on a piece of foil and freeze for at least an hour. This will harden the clay.

Remove the clay from the freezer.Step 12 Push the cutter through clay and foil in ¼" slices. Wiggle the cutter through the foil.
TIP: If some of the clay smears when you cut, use an X-ACTO® knife to cut away the smear.

Once you have cut each agate, remove the foil from the center.
Step 5
Run each piece through the pasta machine on its widest setting, or roll over them with the acrylic roller to flatten them to be half as thick. This will make them all varying shapes and sizes.

Use an X-ACTO® knife to make small ticks around the edge of the agates.

Place all of the clay agates on a flat piece of foil and bake in the oven for fifteen minutes or less at 275°. Monitor the baking to sure that they do not burn.

Remove the agates from the oven and let cool completely.
Step 6
Paint the edges of the agates with liquid gilding. Let dry.

Apply a coat of gel medium on top of each agate. Let dry.

Arrange the agates on top of the box so that they fit and are evenly spaced.

Use gel medium to glue down the agates to the box.

Use a small screwdriver to remove the latch from the front of the box, and glue an agate to the lid so that it sits halfway on the lid and halfway on the box when closed.
