color block fringe scarf

If you’re looking for easy scarf ideas, try this pretty knitted one – it’s a breeze! Craftsy DIY expert Brett Bara will show you how to knit a simple color block pattern, then add a lovely fringe to make this scarf something really special!
Step 1
SCARF

With color A (Peony), cast on 32 stitches. Knit every row for 15" (38 cm).

Change to color B (Biscuit) and knit every row for 25" (63.5 cm).

Change to color C (Minty) and knit every row for 20" (51 cm).

TIP: At this point, the scarf should measure 60" (152 cm) from cast-on.

Bind off and weave in all ends.
Step 2
FRINGE

Step 1 Holding colors A, B and C together, wrap all three strands of yarn around a hardcover book several times. Cut the wrapped yarn at one end of the book, creating a bundle of yarn lengths, each approximately 20" (51 cm) long.

Step 2 Repeat the wrapping and cutting in as many batches as necessary to complete your fringe. You’re going to make seven fringe sections on each side of your scarf, with about 8-10 strands in each section. That means you’ll want a total of 112-140 strands of yarn.

Step 3 Bend the paperclip to make an elongated “U” shape. Gather about 8-10 strands of yarn and fold them in half. Place the folded midpoint of the yarn through the folded paperclip and insert the ends of the paperclip through any stitch in the first knitted row of the scarf. Draw the entire paperclip through the scarf, but only pull through about 3" (8 cm) of yarn.

Step 4 Remove the paperclip from the strands of yarn. You’ll be left with a loop of yarn strands sticking out from the scarf’s stitch. Now, draw the cut ends of the yarn strands through the loop, and pull gently to tighten the loop into a knot, with the fringe extending below it. You’ve just completed your first fringe section.

Step 5 Repeat Steps 1-4 to add six more fringe sections to the same end of the scarf, making sure to space them evenly across the short width. Repeat the steps again to add seven fringe sections to the bound-off edge of the scarf, too. Trim the ends of the fringe, if you need to, and that’s it! Nice work!
