Description

For kids, robots are the stuff of the future and science fiction, they are drawn to them. Unlike memorizing textbooks and regurgitating information, kids are instantly engaged and actually want to learn and experiment with robots. And best of all, they're not just learning about robotics, they are learning engineering, math, programming and general science concepts such as sensors. Edison Robot is the result of a genuine passion for innovation and a vision to make electronics, engineering, robotics and programming accessible to as many people as possible. These LEGO® compatible educational robots are clean, safe, reusable, expandable and robust, providing students across all grade levels, from ages 5+, with a range of combinations, and possibilities. Along Edison's face are Lego-compatible plates that allow the Edison robots to be scaled up into sophisticated creations, or even combined and doubled up for a more complicated system.

Edison Educational Robot Kit, 2 Pack is rated 2.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Hugely overpriced, difficult to work with These robots are available from the manufacturer for about $50 each. They're designed to work with Legos, although their EdCreate kit (sold separately)doesn't always have a good enough connection (in particular, there are designs for a two-Edison tank that shoots rubber bands, but the rubber band puts so much torque on the pieces that they come off the Edison before we can shoot the rubber band). The barcodes are great when they work. Sometimes you can run the Edison over the barcode a dozen times, and it won't scan the barcode. The remote control idea is good, but frequently, a remote with 30 buttons will only have 2-3 buttons that will program to different things. My dvd player can tell when I hit different buttons, but the Edison tends to respond to several buttons the same way. The EdComm connection requires that your computer headphone sound be all the way up (it plugs into the headphone jack and sounds like an old fashioned modem. My older Samsung Galaxy tablet does not go loud enough for the software). The software is online only, with Python based and Scratch based alternatives. There's one that's clearly designed for younger students (all the blocks are much bigger) that's kind of like the Lego Mindstorm software. You can look at the software without purchasing the robots to judge whether it will work for your students. While I appreciate the amount of thought that went into these robots (they have lots of sensors), they're more work than fun (particularly when they won't read the barcodes, or the room is too noisy for the clap sensor to detect, or when you have to try three different remote controls to figure out a set of buttons that will do the functions you want to do. Unfortunately, they don't come with a remote. I would have paid extra to have remotes that definitely worked well with the robots, but even their website doesn't have that option).
