You're new to the skills necessary to complete this project, or maybe you've tried them just once or twice before.
Step 1
Put on latex gloves and wipe down the exterior of the glass jar with alcohol and paper towels, then let it dry. It’s important to remove any smudges or dirt from the glass, since these create a barrier between the glass and etching cream, preventing it from working properly.
Step 2
To apply an adhesive stencil, carefully remove its backing and place it as desired on the glass. Carefully press out any wrinkles or bubbles with your gloved finger. Then use your fingernail (through the glove) to burnish (rub flat) the edges of the stencil cutouts. This will ensure that you do not accidentally push etching cream underneath the stencil’s edges, and it will keep your design crisp and clean.
Step 3
Because etching cream is a little drippy, and you are working on the curved surface of the growler, make a border of stencil tape or masking tape around the stencils themselves. This will protect more of the glass surface from drips or smears as you work.

TIP: If you do happen to drip etching cream directly onto the glass, be sure to wipe it away as quickly as possible.
Step 4
Use a craft stick to apply a thick layer of etching cream over the stencil. It should be thick enough that you cannot see the stencil. Tap and swirl the etching cream with the stick to remove any bubbles and cover any thin spots.

TIP: Be sure to follow the instructions and safety precautions on the Armour Etch® packaging.
Step 5
Let the cream sit for two minutes and wipe away any etching cream that threatens to run over the stencil tape onto the glass. Tap and swirl the cream again with a craft stick. Repeat this step two more times, then let the etching cream remain on the stencil for 5 more minutes.
Step 6
Wash the etching cream off with hot water in a stainless steel sink or bowl (since etching cream can damage porcelain). Remove the stencil and masking tape, and wash one more time before drying and using the growler.
