fall marbled art

Brighten up your fall décor with a swirl of colors – DIY your own marbled art! We’ll show you the basics of paint pouring so you can marble your canvas in a few simple steps. It’s easy and fun (we promise!). Take a look at our instructions below!
Step 1

Project Note: Marbling can get a little messy! We promise it’ll be fun, but you might want to use disposable gloves to protect your hands from the paint.

First, protect your level work surface with a disposable covering.

Step 2

Next, set your canvas on top of the table covering, then set a disposable cup underneath each corner of the canvas, so that it’s lifted up off your work surface.

TIP: This step is optional, but we recommend it. Why? As you pour paint onto your canvas, it’ll overflow and collect in a pool around the sides, where it’ll eventually dry. By raising your canvas, you keep it free of the overflowing paint, so it won’t stick to your table covering.

Step 3
Divide your bottle of pouring medium equally between five separate cups. You’ll use one cup for each color of paint.
Step 4

Add a small amount of paint (about 1/5 of the amount of pouring medium) to each cup, then blend each mixture thoroughly with a craft stick. Mix one of each of the following colors into a cup:

  • Titanium White
  • Mars Black
  • Gold
  • Pumpkin
  • Deep Orange (To make this color, blend Primary Red and Primary Yellow together and mix well.)
Step 5

Time to pour! Pick the paint color you’d like to use first and pour paint puddles in two or three areas of your canvas. Choose your next color and pour it directly into the puddles you’ve made. Continue to pour your paint colors onto the canvas, alternating colors as you go, until all your cups have been poured out.

TIP: There’s no one way to pour paint, so feel free to experiment! Vary the sizes of your paint puddles and alternate colors as much as you like. You can pour into the center of a previous color’s puddle or start a new one. There’s no specific pattern, just have fun and allow the paint to move naturally across your canvas.

Step 6
Wearing your disposable gloves, carefully pick up the canvas and tilt it gently to one side to move the paint around. You’ll see the paint begin to mix and marble. Continue to slowly tilt the canvas in different directions until it’s covered and you’re happy with the way it looks.
Step 7
Be sure to cover the sides of your canvas, too! To do this, just use a craft stick to scoop up some of the excess paint on your table covering and run it across any spots that aren’t covered.
Step 8
Leave your canvas propped up on disposable cups to dry. Keep in mind that this may take 24 hours or more, so be patient! If you’d like to frame your work, visit the custom framing counter at your favorite Michaels store!
