father's day stamped leather keychain

Step 1
Project Note: Metal stamping is a fun and versatile craft that requires practice and patience. Proper understanding of tools is essential.

Cut a ½" x 8½" strip of leather.

TIP: A piece of cardboard can be used in place of a self-healing mat.
Step 2
Lay the leather strip across the steel block with 2" hanging off the left side.
Step 3
Place a piece of stamp straight tape vertically along the left edge of the block and over the leather, to secure the leather in place. Repeat for the right side. If desired, place a piece of tape, horizontally, approximately 1/8" from the bottom.

TIP: Placing tape across the bottom helps with stamping straight.
Step 4
Working left to right, line up the metal letter stamp and strike the top firmly with the hammer. Repeat for all letters to spell “Blessed Dad”, or message of choice. Remove the tape.

TIP: For best results, try to hit the letter stamp in the center of the hammer for an even imprint.
Step 5
Measure approximately 3/8" from the first letter stamped and then the center point across the leather strip. Mark a small dot with the Sharpie® marker. Punch a hole with the small punch option on the Crop-a-dile™ tool.
Step 6
Fold over the end of the leather strip approximately ¾" to the left of the punched hole. Make a mark through the punched hole from Step 5 on the back of the folded piece of the leather strip. Unfold and punch a hole in the mark with the small punch option on the Crop-a-dile™ tool.

TIP: If desired, cut the end at an angle to minimize the leather that will be in the middle of the keychain.
Step 7
Fold over the end of the leather strip approximately ¼" to the right of the last letter stamped. Make a mark through the punched hole from Step 5 on the back of the folded piece of the leather strip. Unfold and punch a hole in the mark with the small punch option on the Crop-a-dile™ tool.
Step 8
To assemble the key ring, fold the end of the leather strip to the left of the hole punched in Step 5, thread a split ring onto the leather strip and then line up the two holes. The key ring should be “trapped” in the fold between the punch holes and the fold. Hold in place.
Step 9
Fold the right end of the strip over and line up the last punch with the first two. Thread the metal rod of the rivet through all three holes and push on the back of the rivet piece. Use the rivet setter to secure the rivet pieces together.
Step 10
Cut the excess leather of the back piece to be flush with the fold at the top of the keychain.
