Beginner
You're new to the skills necessary to complete this project, or maybe you've tried them just once or twice before.
Step 1 |
Click here to download and print the template. Cut out the flamingo face shape. |
Step 2 |
Make a pom-pom for the flamingo's body by cutting a length of yarn that’s about 10" long and set it aside. Make a pom-pom by holding the yarn in one hand and loosely wrapping it around the first three fingers 40 times. Gently slide the entire bundle of looped yarn off of your hand, keeping it as still as possible so that you don’t disturb the loops. |
Step 3 |
Knot the 10" piece of yarn as tightly as you can around the center of the bundle. The tighter you tie the knot, the fluffier your pom-pom will be. TIP: Make sure you tie the knot exactly between the looped ends in order to make the pom-pom completely round. |
Step 4 |
With scissors, snip open all the loops on both ends. Be careful not to trim away the tails of the knot that’s holding the pom-pom together, you’ll use these tails to tie the pom-pom to the flamingo’s legs. |
Step 5 |
Trim your pom-pom with scissors until it is nice and round, so the yarn ends are short enough to be fluffy, not floppy. The finished body should be about 2" across. |
Step 6 |
Take a chenille pipe cleaner and bend it in half. Tie the two pom-pom strings around the bend. This will hold the flamingo legs to the pom-poms. Once tied tightly, trim the ends of the yarn to blend with the pom-pom. |
Step 7 |
Bend the two ends of chenille pipe cleaner legs to form large feet. |
Step 8 |
Cut a piece of chenille pipe cleaner for the neck. Bend it into an "S" curve. |
Step 9 |
Trace the head onto pink cardstock, cut it out, and glue the head to one end of the neck. Let dry. |
Step 10 |
Glue a wiggle eye in place on both sides of the face. Let dry. |
Step 11 |
Push the neck into the pom-pom and add a dab of glue to reinforce the hold. Let dry. |
Step 12 |
Add a dab of glue to the tips of three feathers and push them into the pom-pom, as seen in the project image. Let dry. Share your project photos with #MakeItWithMichaels |
