fondant bow cake

Dress up your next cake with this lovely, textured bow! We’ve partnered with Craftsy® to show you exactly how to cover your cake with silky-smooth fondant, then add a gorgeous gum paste decoration on top. Just watch our video – we’ve got all the tips you need!
Step 1
First, make your cake by following the directions included with your favorite mix (or recipe). Set it aside to cool completely.
Step 2
Next, roll out your white gum paste until it’s 1/8" thick. It should be about the width of two food-safe rulers.
Step 3
Use the textured rolling pin to create a textured pattern on the gum paste’s surface.
Step 4
Now, use a food-safe brush to dust the gum paste’s surface with shimmer Color Dust.
Step 5
With a food-safe straight edge, cut two lengths of gum paste.
Step 6
Repeat Steps 2-5, so that you now have four ribbons of shimmery gum paste. Pretty!
Step 7
Repeat Steps 2-4 one more time. This time, cut a thicker strip that’s the width of two food-safe rulers.
Step 8
Last one! Repeat Step 7 one more time. Now, you should have four narrow ribbons and two thicker ribbons.
Step 9
Cover your cake completely with the blue fondant.
Step 10
With your food-safe brush, gently brush water onto one of the thin fondant ribbons. Starting at the bottom of the cake, begin attaching the ribbon to the cake. Guide the ribbon upward in a straight line, then over the top edge and toward the center. The ribbon should end at the center of the cake’s top surface.
Step 11
Turn the cake 45° and repeat Step 10. This second ribbon should meet the first at the center of the top of the cake.
Step 12
Repeat Step 11 twice more. Now, your cake should have four gum paste ribbons that meet at the center of the cake’s top surface.
Step 13
Cut a diagonal through the center of the ribbons at the top of the cake, then remove the excess gum paste.
Step 14
Cut one of the wide ribbon pieces in half, then cut each end at a slight diagonal, to make your ribbon tails.
Step 15
Make a box knot on the straight edge side of your ribbon tail. Place it on top of your cake so that the diagonal end drapes down over the side of the cake.
Step 16
Now, repeat Step 15 with the other half of your wide ribbon.
Step 17
Cut the second wide ribbon in half. This time, pleat both pieces and make a box knot in both ends. Join both ends to make a bow loop, and let it dry.
Step 18
Repeat Step 17 to make the second bow loop. Let this one dry, too.
Step 19
Once both bow loops are dry, brush each one on its bottom with a little water (to help it stick), then place the bows on the top of the cake.
Step 20
Finally, add a small strip of gum paste to the top of the bow, where the two loops meet. It’s almost (almost!) too beautiful to eat! Great work!
