friendly plastic® alcohol swirl heart pendant

Make this heartfelt gift with Friendly Plastic®.
Step 1
Total Time (Including Dry Time): 45 Min.

Preheat your toaster oven (or a conventional oven) to 225°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or tin foil and lightly grease with baby oil.

Lightly rub the straight edge of the large heart cookie cutter with baby oil and place face-down on the sheet. Pour Friendly Plastic pellets into the cookie cutter, to a depth of about ¼".

Tip: Once you begin adding pellets, do not move the cookie cutter from where you placed it.
Step 2
Place the baking sheet into the pre-heated oven, and let bake. After 15 minutes, remove the sheet and check the pellets inside the cookie cutter. If they are completely clear and indistinct from one another, they are melted and ready to be removed. If the pellets are still white or are still separate balls and place the sheet back in the oven, checking every 5 minutes until they are melted.

Once the pellets are melted and completely clear, remove the baking sheet from the oven. Quickly squeeze a few drops of alcohol inks in different colors onto the melted pellets. Use a toothpick rubbed with baby oil to swirl the drops throughout the heart, creating marbled and swirling patterns.

Tip: Hold onto the cookie cutter with tongs or your oven mitt as you swirl, in order to keep it from moving.

Step 3
Lightly rub the end of a toothpick with baby oil and insert it into melted near the top of the heart, gently pushing all the way through the pellets to the sheet underneath. Move the toothpick in a small circle to create a larger hole and remove the toothpick.

Use oven mitts or a heat-safe spatula to pick up the cookie cutter and parchment paper or tin foil all at once. Place into a container filled with ice water. This will cause the Friendly Plastic to immediately cool and harden.

Tip: Once the Friendly Plastic® has turned white again, you will know it is cool and safe to remove from the ice bath.
Step 4
Pop the plastic heart out of the cookie cutter and dry completely. Trim any uneven edges with scissors.

Tip: If there is any baby oil remaining on the surface of the heart, wipe it off with rubbing alcohol (or a vinegar-based cleaner).

Use two pliers (e.g., flat nose and long nose) to hold a jump ring, with the opening on top and in between the two pliers. Simultaneously push one side of the ring forward and the other side backward to open the ring. Thread the ring through the hole in the heart and use the pliers to close the ring. Cut a length of ¼" ribbon and thread through the closed jump ring. Knot the ends and hang as an ornament or wear as a pendant.
