friendly plastic® photo transfer heart magnet

Add an adorable Photo Transfer Heart Magnet to your fridge or locker with Friendly Plastic®.
Step 1
Total Time (Including Dry Time): 4½ Hours

Print out a toner-based copy of a family photo or pretty picture.

Tip: Be sure to resize the photo to fit within the outline of your cookie cutter.
Step 2
Preheat your toaster oven or a conventional oven to 225°F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or tin foil. Lightly rub the straight edge of the cookie cutter with baby oil and place face-down on the sheet. Pour Friendly Plastic® pellets into the cookie cutter, to a depth of about ¼".

Tip: Do not move the cookie cutter once you’ve filled it.
Step 3
Place the cookie sheet into the pre-heated oven, and let bake. After 15 minutes, remove the cookie sheet and check the pellets inside the cookie cutter. If they are completely clear and indistinct from one another, they are melted and ready to be removed. If the pellets are still white or are still separate balls, place the sheet back in the oven, check every 5 minutes until they are melted.
Step 4
Once the pellets are melted and completely clear, remove the cookie sheet from the oven. Use oven mitts or a heat-safe spatula to pick up the cookie cutter and parchment paper or tin foil all at once, and place into a container filled with ice water. This will cause the Friendly Plastic to immediately cool and harden.

Tip: Once the Friendly Plastic® has turned white again, you’ll know it’s cool and safe to remove from the ice bath.
Step 5
Pop the plastic heart out of the cookie cutter and dry completely. Trim any uneven edges with scissors. Set aside.

Tip: If there’s any baby oil remaining on the surface of the heart, wipe it off with rubbing alcohol or a vinegar-based cleaner.
Step 6
Use a paintbrush to apply a thin coat of gel medium to the image side of your photo copy. Let dry. Add a second and third layer of gel medium to the image, letting the medium dry completely between layers.

Tip: Make sure there aren’t any white streaks or drips on your image. Heavy layers may not dry clear.
Step 7
Once your image is completely dry, place the Friendly Plastic® heart on top, and trace around it with a pencil. Cut out the heart-shaped image, turn it over and wet the paper with a damp paper towel. Very gently, rub the paper away with your finger, re-wetting as necessary, until the paper is completely gone, and only the gel medium remains.
Step 8
Use the paintbrush to add a thin layer of gel medium to the surface of the heart. Place the heart-shaped gel transfer on top, being careful to match the edges as closely as possible. Carefully smooth the gel transfer across the top of the heart and down its sides, removing any wrinkles as you go. Let dry for at least 2 hours.
Step 9
Remove the backing from a magnetic dot and stick it to the back of the heart. Display on your refrigerator or any magnetic surface.
