friendly plastic® teardrop pendant

Make a simple, yet sparkly, necklace with Friendly Plastic®.
Step 1
Total Time (Including Dry Time): 4.5 Hours

Preheat your toaster oven or a conventional oven to 225°F.

Place the silicone mold onto your baking sheet and sprinkle glitter into the bottom of your selected cabochon. Fill the rest of the space in the mold shape with Friendly Plastic® pellets, patting down the pellets with your finger. The pellets should come all the way to the top of the shape, but not spill out over the sides.

Tip:  Try to spread the glitter evenly, but don’t make too thick of a layer. This will distort the shape of the cabochon.
Step 2
Place the baking sheet into the pre-heated oven and let bake. After 10 minutes, remove the cookie sheet and check the pellets inside the mold. If they are completely clear and indistinct from one another, they are melted and ready to be removed. If the pellets are still white or are still separate balls, place the sheet back in the oven and check every 5 minutes until they are melted.

Tip: If your melting pellets do not fill the mold shape completely, this is a good time to add a few more pellets. Drop in a few at the time, and lightly tap them into the melting plastic. Be careful, as the plastic will be quite hot to the touch.

Once the pellets are melted and completely clear, remove the baking sheet from the oven.

Tip:  Take a look at the melted plastic. If the surface is uneven, put a little baby oil on the tip of your finger and lightly smooth the plastic out. Again, be careful as the melted plastic will be hot.
Step 3
Lightly rub the end of a toothpick with baby oil, then insert it into melted pellets at the narrow end of the mold, gently pushing all the way through to the mold itself. Move the toothpick in a small circle to create a larger hole, and remove the toothpick.

Use oven mitts or a heat-safe spatula to pick up the mold and place it into a container filled with ice water. This will cause the Friendly Plastic to immediately cool and harden.

Tip: Once the Friendly Plastic® has turned white again, you’ll know it’s cool and safe to remove from the ice bath.
Step 4
Pop the cabochon out of the mold and dry completely.

Tip:  If there is any baby oil remaining on the surface of the Friendly Plastic®, wipe it off with rubbing alcohol (or a vinegar-based cleaner), but be gentle while wiping the glittered surface of the cabochon.

With a brush, paint a thin layer of Mod Podge® Hard Coat over the glitter on the cabochon to help keep them in place. Let dry.

Cut a piece of cording to the length you desire, thread through the hole in the cabochon, and make an overhand knot just above the top of the cabochon. Knot the ends of the cording together and your pendant is ready to wear.
