fun with fondant: dot bow cake

Step 1
Project Note:
   -  You will need 4½ cups of cake batter for this project. ?
 
One day in advance, prepare fondant adhesive following recipe instructions. 
Step 2
Using black icing color, tint 1 oz. fondant black. 
Step 3
Using fondant roller with pink guide rings, roll out fondant. 
Step 4
Using fondant trimmer, cut thin strips, about ¼" to 1/8" wide. Set aside. 
Step 5
Using 9" fondant roller with purple guide rings, roll out gum paste. Cut into strips, measuring 7" x 2½" in size. 
Step 6
Using damp brush, lay black stripes vertically on gum paste. 
Step 7
Using rolling pin, re-roll strip, pressing fondant into gum paste. Cut into 6" x 2" strip, reserving remaining fondant for later step. 
Step 8
To form bow, turn strip over, with stripes facing down. Bring short ends of strip into middle; bunch together to form bow. Attach ends together with fondant adhesive. Use scrunched up paper towels or napkins to support bow loops as they dry. 
Step 9
For tails, repeat process, finishing with two strips measuring 1½" x 3" in size. Trim ends to form ribbons. Scrunch flat end of tail. Place towels or napkins under tails to hold movement in ribbons. Lay all pieces on cornstarch-dusted board. Let dry overnight. 
Step 10
Prepare cake batter following recipe instructions. Bake and cool two cake layers. Fill and stack for 4" high cake. Prepare cake for fondant covering. 
Step 11
Using 20" fondant roller with Gold guide rings, roll 14 oz. white fondant on measuring mat. Cut into strip measuring 20 x 5 in. in size. 
Step 12
Using dot roller, imprint fondant. 
Step 13
Leaving fondant on mat, transfer mat to cake board. Chill until fondant is chilled, but not firm, about 15 minutes. Remove mat and fondant from cake board. 
Step 14
Using ruler, cut a strip measuring 4" x 19" in size. Attach to sides of cake, lightly pressing to adhere. Trim excess. 
Step 15
Using black icing color, tint 5 oz. fondant black. 
Step 16
Using 9" fondant roller with purple guide rings, roll out fondant; cut into a 6" circle. Place on top of cake. Smooth with fondant smoother. 
Step 17
Using fondant adhesive, attach bow to cake.
