You're new to the skills necessary to complete this project, or maybe you've tried them just once or twice before.
Step 1
Project Note: A stainless steel sink (or bowl) is needed for this project, since etching cream can damage porcelain.

Put on latex gloves and wipe down the exterior of the glass jar with alcohol and paper towels, then let it dry.

TIP: It is important to remove any smudges or dirt from the glass, since these create a barrier between the glass and etching cream, preventing it from working properly.
Step 2
Punch out the letters you want to use on the jar. Trim down the excess paper around each stencil letter.

TIP: You can use each letter only once, so you may need to buy a second package for some words and phrases.
Step 3
If desired, you can lightly spray the back of each stencil letter with stencil adhesive. This will help the letters to stick onto the glass jar while you’re applying etching cream.
Step 4
Carefully place the letters on the glass jar, to form a word or phrase. Use your fingernail (through the glove) to burnish (rub flat) the edges of the stencil cutouts. This will ensure that you don’t accidentally push etching cream underneath the stencil’s edges, and it will keep your design crisp and clean.
Step 5
Make a border of stencil tape around the stencils themselves to help hold them in place and to protect the glass surface from drips and smears as you work.

TIP: If you do happen to drip etching cream directly onto the glass, be sure to wipe it away as quickly as possible.
Step 6
Use a craft stick to apply a thick layer of etching cream over the stencil. It should be thick enough that you cannot see the stencil. Tap and swirl the etching cream with the stick to remove any bubbles and cover any thin spots.

TIP: Be sure to follow the instructions and safety precautions on the etching cream’s packaging.
Step 7
Let the etching cream sit for two minutes and wipe away any excess that threatens to run over the stencil tape onto the glass. Tap and swirl the cream again with a craft stick. Repeat this step two more times, then let the etching cream remain on the stencil for 5 more minutes.
Step 8
Wash the etching cream off with hot water in a stainless steel sink (or bowl).
Step 9
Remove the stencil and masking tape and wash one more time before drying and using the jar.
